Windows 10: RDP fails on Win11 24H2: The selected user credential requires that local smart card

Hello,I haven't been able to establish a remote connection using RDP after I installed Win11 24H2 to one of our customer's server using "Secomea's LinkManager Access".The way it works:I authenticate in their portal with my credentialsI select the server where I want to establish a connection.A plugin/app pops in and manages the connection in browser.It then interacts with RDP which will ask me for my Windows CredentialsRDP error appears:[Window Title] Remote Desktop Connection [Content] The selected user credential requires that local smart card and 'Windows Hello for Business' devices be mad

This can occur if the RDP client is configured to use cached credentials or if there's a misconfiguration in the RDP file itself.

Here are some steps you can take to troubleshoot and resolve the issue:

1. Check the RDP File: Ensure that the .rdp file does not contain any saved credentials that might be overriding the inputted username. You can do this by opening the .rdp file with a text editor and looking for lines starting with username:s: and prompt for credentials:i:. If prompt for credentials:i: is set to 0, it will not prompt for credentials and will use the saved ones instead. Change it to 1 to prompt for credentials.

2. Clear Cached Credentials: On the client machine, you can clear saved RDP credentials by going to the Windows Credential Manager and removing any stored credentials related to the remote desktop.
   
3. Update RDP Client: Ensure that you are using the latest version of the RDP client, as updates often include fixes for known issues.
   
4. Group Policy Settings: If you're in an enterprise environment, check the Group Policy settings to ensure that they are not configured to use the last logged-on user's credentials for RDP sessions.
   
5. RDP Client Settings: Within the RDP client, check the settings to ensure that it's not set to use the credentials of the last user. This can typically be found under the 'Options' or 'Advanced' settings within the RDP connection window.

If I save .rdp files with different users for the same target, it will log in with the previous user's credentials.- Make an admin.rdp file with the administrator login and tell it to save the password.
- Make another normal.rdp file with the normal login and tell it to save the password
- Connect using the admin.rdp file and log in administrator
- Connect using the normal.rdp file and it will AUTOMATICALLY login you in as ADMINISTATOR.
- Type cmdkey /list:*|more
- There will be ONE listing for that target with the user name of Administrator- Look inside the both .rdp files with notepad. One shows Administrator and the other normal.
- Edit the normal and it shows Administrator. Tell it to forget the credentials and it returns to normal.
- Connect using normal.rdp and log in.
- Type cmdkey /list:*|more
- There will be ONE listing for that target with the user name of Normal
- Connect with the Admin.rdp and it will log you in as user normal.

This used to work. Now you can only have one user per target. It doesn't matter what kind of games you play with Generic, Domain Password, with TERMSRV or without, it only allows 1 user name per computer no matter what name is contained in the .rdp file. The .rdp will run only who that last user was, not the name in the .rdp file.

RDP blocks Smart Card connected to the host

In the light of the fight against coronavirus, our company works remotely. We have a server in the data center with client-bank keys (smart cards) inserted into it. Accountants are connected on the RDP and do not see the keys. Although if you connect locally
(from the console) or through VNC, for example, the keys are visible! ... How can I solve this problem? There are several accountants and they must replace one another. But passing keys, as you know, is not an option. I will be glad to all the suggestions.
