    Reactivating win XP in vmware

I have a vmware virtual wqin XP machine and I have been asked to re-activate it after over 10 years of use!. There is no reactivation number in Australia for XP. The 1800 number given asked for the code on my computer, then said those numbers were "invallid" and transferred me to a rep who said "there is no way to reactivate win XP". Is this only for Australia or is there a way?. My xp is on a vmware virtual machine I guess I could just change the system as some pirate sites suggest but why do I need to do this? I own the win xp since new and only use it to drive an old and very good scanner

    :)

Running XP Professional .iso on VMWARE on Win 11

An older VMWare version (6) went haywire on my Win 10, so I figured I'd try their version 16 on Win 11 and Install a copy of XP Professional -32-bit. Everything is OK until one has to put in the Product Key. This can be found on the .iso in .txt files. But the Installer keeps refuting it [and I certainly did not get it wrong 4 times!] The only advice I can find is a) a Registry Key fiddle that doesn't exist in Win 11, and b) a suggestion that since XP in all its manifestations is no longer supported by Microsoft, too bad... This advice doesn't make sense, as a lot of us Users need older versions of Windows to run old programs. Why offer software well past its sell-by date...

    Has anyone any ideas, please?

  3. VMware-usb storage device not recognized

    Hello,

I'm running Windows XP in Workstation Player on a Windows 10 laptop.

My USB CD/DVD drive is able to mount in the Player. So is a flash drive.

My Western Digital ssd (My Passport Ultra) is listed in "Removable devices", but fails to mount, giving this error:

In the Virtual Machine settings, the USB controller is using usb 2.0.

The WD ssd is compatible with usb 3.0 and 2.0, and is supported by Windows XP. My desktop computer running Win XP has no problem mounting the drive.

The device manager in virtual Win XP shows it as an "unknown device."

I've read everything I can find on the problem, and tried a number of suggestions from the knowledge base at VMware as well as solutions via google searches.

Perhaps the WD ssd just won't work on the free version of VM Workstation Player (v. 14).

    Anyone have any suggestions?

    Thanks,
    Paul

How to convert actual XP PC with apps and files into XP VM on Win 10?

    Hi there
    @glnz

Happy Xmas and even SAFER New Year. !!

If you have VMWARE (player or VMWare workstation) do the following

    1) First backup the XP machine with Macrium Free -- if you have problems use a partition manager to "reduce" partition size and simply use the CLONE Disk rather than IMAGE -- although stand alone Image should work to image an XP system.

    2) Create a BLANK VM -- use the wizard and say I'll create the OS later. Just create a Virtual Disk of the appropriate size

    3) Create (from your HOST machine) a bootable ISO from Macrium Free
(You need this step because when we start creating the XP image you want the VM to be able to load the "Virtual Disk Drivers --otherwise you'll get "No Hard Disks Found".

    4) Set the ISO as the boot device for the VM

    5) after the Macrium system has booted restore the XP image - You might need to attach another HDD to the VM -- depending on where you saved the XP image.

    6) now boot the VM again -- this time from the VM's HDD.

    7) run the install VMWARE tools package otherwise you won't get decent Video / sound / nice mouse handling etc etc.

Note - if the boot fails initially - boot again from the ISO and use the Macrium option "Fix boot problems" -- for XP though not normally an an issue.

If you then want Internet on the XP system install Firefox
To share files W10 systems need to have SMB1 enabled. There's a few other details -- I've got a few posts on XP just search the Forum

Here's an XP VM running with an MD (Minidisc recorder) - copying a CD to an MD

If you need more assistance - please post again.

While HYPER-V is good for some things - I'd suggest for older legacy OS'es and hardware use VMWare -- VBOX might also be OK - I think though VBOX and me "just don't get on" -- VMWare is simple and unless doing bonkers things with it (I do at times) it seems to work straight out of the box (at least on Windows HOST machines).

I'm actually running my XP on a Linux NAS server using VMWare -- latest kernels on Linux don't always play nice with VMWare but usually WINDOWS hosts work OK.

    Cheers
