Smart Compose will appear in the new Gmail

Email makes it easy to share information with just about anyone—friends, colleagues and family—but drafting a message can take some time. Last year, we introduced Smart Reply in Gmail to help you quickly reply to incoming emails. Today, we're announcing Smart Compose, a new feature powered by artificial intelligence, to help you draft emails from scratch, faster.

Draft emails quickly with confidence

From your greeting to your closing (and common phrases in between), Smart Compose suggests complete sentences in your emails so that you can draft them with ease. Because it operates in the background, you can write an email like you normally would, and Smart Compose will offer suggestions as you type. When you see a suggestion that you like, click the “tab” button to use it.

Smart Compose helps save you time by cutting back on repetitive writing, while reducing the chance of spelling and grammatical errors. It can even suggest relevant contextual phrases. For example, if it's Friday it may suggest "Have a great weekend!" as a closing phrase.

Get started

Over the next few weeks, Smart Compose will appear in the new Gmail for consumers, and will be made available for G Suite customers in the workplace in the coming months.

To get started, make sure you’ve enabled the new Gmail by going to Settings > “Try the new Gmail.” Next, go to the general tab in your settings, scroll down and enable “experimental access.” If you want to switch back, you can always uncheck the box.

New Gmail compose formatting and download options for G Suite users

What’s changing

We're adding three new features to Gmail:

Shortcut to undo/redo in the compose window

Shortcut to strikethrough text

Ability to download messages as .EML files in rfc822 format from Gmail on the web

Why you’d use it

Undo/Redo: If you need to undo an action, like if you accidentally delete the content of your draft of an email, you can do so straight from the compose view. Anytime you have undo, you want to also have the option of redo, so we’ve added that as well.

Strikethrough: Strikethrough is a visual cue that something has been completed or can be used as an edit suggestion. We’ve heard from you that this functionality is critical to quickly and efficiently write emails, especially when you want to visually indicate a change in language.

Download as .EML: This format is recognized by other email clients, allowing you to view the Gmail content along with attachments within these clients. In addition, with this functionality users can now add these downloaded messages as attachments in their emails.

How to get started

Admins: No action necessary.

End users - new compose formatting: Click on the formatting menu in the Gmail compose window.

End users - new download format: Open the overflow (three dot) menu and select “Download message.”

Google Gmail adds Smart Compose, send later, and more features

G Suite’s journey began 15 years ago with the introduction of Gmail in 2004. Back then, Gmail pioneered a new and secure approach to email with 1GB of free storage and lightning-fast Google search built right in. Gmail continues to help people manage their work and personal lives with the help of useful innovations—from priority inbox, smart labels and spam filtering to Smart Reply, Smart Compose and nudges—all the while ensuring that email remains a safe, secure, and user-friendly experience for all.

Today, as we celebrate 15 years of innovation in Gmail, we’re excited to announce new features that promise to bring even greater efficiency and assistance.

Assistive email, on the go

We introduced Smart Compose to help you draft new emails from scratch, faster. According to a report from International Data Corporation (IDC), by 2020 mobile workers will account for nearly three-quarters (72.3 percent) of the U.S. workforce. Smart Compose already saves people from typing over 1 billion characters each week on the web, and we’re excited to bring the productivity power of Smart Compose to Android devices (with iOS coming soon) and four new languages: Spanish, French, Italian and Portuguese.

In addition, Smart Compose can now adapt to the way you write. For example, if you prefer to greet your teams with a friendly, “Hey team,” it can help you stay true to your voice. It can even suggest a subject line based on the body of the message you’ve written. Check out this post to learn more about the ins and outs of how Smart Compose works.

Write now, send later

We understand that work can often carry over to non-business hours, but it’s important to be considerate of everyone’s downtime. We want to make it easier to respect everyone’s digital well-being, so we’re adding a new feature to Gmail that allows you to choose when an email should be sent. Just write your email as you normally would, then schedule it to arrive in your recipient’s inbox at a later date and time.

From static to dynamic

Recently, we announced changes to make email more dynamic, interactive and actionable. Now, you can quickly take action on email—like respond to a comment thread in Google Docs, schedule a meeting, or fill out a questionnaire—right from within the message itself. This makes it easier to stay focused on the task at hand since you won’t have to open a new tab or leave your inbox. We’re also making it possible for info within an email to be kept up-to-date, so the content is always accurate no matter when you look at it.
