Reboots after logo then black screen

    My basic specs:

    CPU - 5960X
    MOBO: ASUS Rampage V Extreme
    GPU: GTX 980

I turn my computer on, see the BIOS just fine, it shows the Windows 10 logo, then a black screen. If I move my mouse around, I see the cursor. After nearly 30 seconds (i'm guessing), my computer reboots itself, and the cycle repeats.

My motherboard is kind of funky. By pressing F8, it actually goes into a BIOS menu that allows me to select which device I want to boot from, instead of going to Safe Mode. This is what I'd like to do, actually, so I can choose my last known good configuration.

Is there any other way to get to this screen to choose my last known good configuration, can I use a USB flash drive and boot to it to get to a repair screen or what course of action should I take?

    :)

  2. 10 update

My desk top will not reboot after update. Black screen and a small circle of dots and the line "restoring your previous version of windows. Then the screen goes black again, shows the blue windows logo and then back to black screen with little circle.

HELP it has been like this for days.

  3. Windows 10 black screen after bios screen. Recovery media also shows black screen.

My PC just shows a black screen after the bios screen. This started happening after rebooting my pc after a virus scan. The windows boot logo doesn't even show up. I tried to repair this using my Windows 10 installation usb but after showing the windows
boot logo, it just shows a black screen so I'm unable to use any of the recovery options. Any suggestions on what I should do now?

Hi, 'last known good configuration' was last available in Win 7. Win 8 on introduced the rather optimistic (my opinion, experience!) automatic repair sequence and complex set of menus to navigate for troubleshooting.

It would help if you could state the history:
Did you upgrade (from what?) or clean install?
Did your PC work successfully on win 10, then fail or behave as you described after upgrading or clean installing?

Assuming you have boot media for Win 10 and your BIOS is appropriately configured, you can boot from your bootable DVD or USB device and navigate to the troubleshooting and repair options.

I would start by going to a command prompt, running chkdsk C: /F, then sfc /scannow.
(Having checked C: actually is your Windows disk/partition as viewed from that command prompt)

After that there's a DISM command you can try. If you can't boot to Windows you can't do an in-place repair install though.

There are plenty of threads about black screens on the forum, but many will be related to the poster's experience immediately after installing Win 10. If that's your case, it would be worth reading through some of those.

I tried all those. I gave up, bit the bullet and reinstalled everything. Had to reinstall 7, then upgrade to 10. I didn't have my 10 key, thought I could recover it online, but I found out you can't, the hard way.

    Hi, there isn't a Win 10 key.
Since the Nov update, Win 10 installations are supposed to accept qualifying Windows license codes.

So with latest installation media, there is no need to reinstall your previous Windows to upgrade.

Further, once you have installed '10 successfully on a given PC, you can reinstall it and it will activate. You also have the right to install either- or both- the 32 bit or 64 bit versions. (For example I can swap HDDs on my PC- one has one as an upgrade, the other has the 64 bit version as a clean install).

Glad you're up and running. Hope you haven't lost any data, but it means you have to configure all settings and reinstall programs... Please mark solved if so.
