    Rebuilding Icons

I notice that all of my shortcut icons have turned black. I'm wondering if rebuilding the icon cache will correct this. Also, if I do rebuild the icons will the rest of the icons keep their thumbnails-icons that came from various Internet sites and the thumbnails-icon images I've created?

    Thanks

    :)

Lost default photo viewer after profile rebuild

Thanks Brink. I've tried those steps before i started searching Google. After the profile rebuild i don't have the Photo app listed to choose to make it default in either the system settings for default apps or the Open With option.

I can't even find it doing a search. Seems to have been removed somehow with the profile rebuild, which doesn't make sense.

Might be helpful to list what i've done Rebuilding Icons :) I've done the open with check, the choose default program in the system menu, tried that in device manager default programs also. I've checked the programs and features Turn windows features on/off and it's not listed there (never thought it was but that was a suggestion), searched the MS Store, it's not listed there either.

I don't like playing in the registry unless i have defined steps and haven't found anything for this yet, just the Win7 version like in my OP.

Safe way to rebuild icon cache in windows 8.1?

Hi people, I've noticed the Task Scheduler icon on my desktop is "low quality"

    Rebuilding Icons shortcut-task-scheduler-jpg.jpg

Now I found this on the internet: Rebuild the Icon cache in Windows 8/7

How to purge and rebuild the icon cache I would have to go to C:\Users\Username\AppData\Local folder and delete the hidden IconCache.db file.

Is this safe to do this?
I don't want to mess up my system.

Anyone tried this before on windows 8.1?

    Thanks!

    Rebuilding Icons

    Icons

We appreciate your reply. Since system restore did not help in getting the icons to display, we suggest that you rebuild the icon cache in the Command Prompt. To do this task, kindly follow the steps below:

    • Close and save anything that you are working on before proceeding. The next steps will involve closing file explorer and restarting the PC.
    • Open a command prompt (admin).
    • Copy and paste each command below one at a time into the command prompt, and press Enter after each command.

      ie4uinit.exe -show

      taskkill /IM explorer.exe /F

      DEL /A /Q "%localappdata%\IconCache.db"

      DEL /A /F /Q "%localappdata%\Microsoft\Windows\Explorer\iconcache*"

      shutdown /r /f /t 00
    • The last command will instantly restart your PC.

Let us know if you will need further assistance.
