  1. Recovery with system image from a different machine

I have a system image backup that I created from my laptop.

I'm trying to setup my desktop with that system image.

When I go into re-image my computer I get as far as selecting the system image backup (which is located on an external hard drive) but I get stuck on a screen titled, "choose additional restore options" wherein it suggests that I make a system repair disk.

I have made the system repair disk but I'm never given the option to proceed with the restore from this particular backup.

All the drives are healthy. The setup assistant has no trouble seeing the drive or the backup. I just can't get past this screen where my only options are to create the system repair disk or go back.

Also, to troubleshoot the issue I've tried the same process but on the laptop that generated the backup and I do not encounter this issue.

Is there another way to do this?

    :)

    Windows 10 System Image recovery

    Hi,

A couple of things to check...

Is the new drive Initialized properly... If your system is using UEFI Bios it needs to be Initialized as GPT... If it is Legacy Bios it needs to be Initialized as MBR...

This is not the same as formatting... It is a step that must be done first with a completely blank HDD with no partitions...

There is a possibility that the Recovery process is trying to use the HDD with the image on it as the drive to reload the image to...

You may have better luck if you connect the drive with the System Image by a USB adapter...

Also... did you make the System Repair DVD on the same machine as you are working on ? Recovery Disks sometimes will not function if a different version\build of Windows...

Recovery with system image from a different machine

    System Image Recovery Hangs

I discovered that if I wait until the step "Advanced Options" to connect the external drive containing the System Image, and then click on "System Image Recovery", the recovery proceeds normally.

If I connect the external drive before starting the recovery process, that is, before clicking on "Shift" and "Restart", the system hangs when I get to the "System Image Recovery" step.
