regedit not open from run command

O . . . K, I was just in the process of doing that too and I found about humpty gazillion explorers. Mostly, though, just File Explorer and Internet Explorer, although I did find Planet Explorer. *Smile Which is probably something I've downloaded for my fiction writing.

Not sure about that... I just right clicked the start button, Files Explorer
select the system partition on the left and search for regedit in the box, top right.

Ah and I clicked on my shortcut for This PC, clicked on "Search this PC" typed in Explorer and let 'er rip! *Smile And, boy, do it pick up just about everything that ever had "explorer" in it.

So, now I think I'll go back and try for regedit. *Smile

regedit not open from run command

I found several threads on other forums where there was some kind of malware causing the problem.

Run a scan with your AV software and download, install and run Malwarebytes Anti Malware. See if either find a problem.

    Found it. Thanks davexnet
It actually was an old version of regedit in the system32 directory, It was left over for the Win7 upgrade.

    Same issue as with explorer.exe.

Make sure all those Win7 executables in \system32 that exists in the Win10 \Windows directory are erased from the system32 folder.

And now you know the rest of the story . . . why a large number of us prefer clean installs. *Smile

I'm very glad you got to the bottom of your problem.

I've never heard of this. Usually the upgrade cleans up old versions of system files and moves them to \windows.old.
Secondly, isn't the default location for regedit.exe \windows in Win 7?
How did it get into system32 ?

regedit not open from run command

Yes except those of us with 100's of programs, some of which are hard to find. I always do a clean install when the source system is not loaded down.

This system has been around for a while. Probably since XP, so there was some cleaning out to do. I wish a clean install was possible on this one, but I would have lost a lot of stuff.

I have a PC with two installs of XP, both installed about 12 years ago. One was clean, and one was upgrade from
Windows ME. The old installs are still working well, the upgrade just as trouble-free as the clean install.
Sometimes it's just a matter of luck; whether there is a small conflict with something you had in the OS before
the upgrade that wasn't 100% clean or whatever.

I always do a clean install whether or not the system is loaded is 'loaded down'. Trying to find these sorts of problems, such as regedit or explorer, can take days, maybe longer. Doing a clean install and reinstalling all drivers and programs can be done in one day. Everyone has their preference of course. I just like the one that has the best chance of giving me an easy life. *Biggrin Well done for persevering and finding the resolution though! And well done to @davexnet for making the post that led you there
