    Register Windows Defender Security Center

    Hello.
I can not launch Windows Defender Security Center in my current user account (I can launch it in others). Upon trying to launch it from shortcut I get the message "Package could not be registered". I've tried the standard register all apps and an In-place Upgrade with no results.
    Any suggestions?

    :)

Windows defender keeps turning itself on

For Windows Defender to appropriately disable, an alternate security program must be properly registered with the Windows Action Center. Anything else is a workaround and will likely fail or at least be unstable, since Windows Defender is designed to automatically enable
when no 3rd-party security application is installed and running.

The following excerpt is from the
    Support Guide for MBAM 3.0
    .

    Windows Action Center

You may have noticed a flag in your system tray that sometimes has a red icon with a white X appear over the flag. That is a status indicator for the Windows Action Center, which tells you when your computer has a security issue that needs your attention.
Malwarebytes Premium 3.0 or Malwarebytes Trial 3.0 can now be registered as a security solution on your computer. There are three settings available, which will be abbreviated here for easier reading. Brief descriptions for the meaning of
    each setting are also provided.

    • Let Malwarebytes choose whether to register: Malwarebytes will determine whether it should be registered in Action Center. The program will not register when Microsoft Security Essentials is in use on a Windows 7 or older operating system.
It will also not register when Windows Defender is used on a Windows 8 or newer OS.
    • Always register Malwarebytes: Malwarebytes program status will always appear in Action Center.
    • Never register Malwarebytes: Malwarebytes program status will never appear in Action Center.

    Defender disabled by Malwarebytes?

Though Le Boule's explanation was sufficient for the previous version of MalwareBytes Antimalware Premium 2.x, the more recent MBAM 3.0 revision has changed this relationship with the Microsoft security products even further.

    The
    Malwarebytes 3.0 Help - Settings
page now includes the following description of this relationship and the configurations possible that affect the way it registers itself with the Windows Action Center. This then also affects the way Windows Defender operates,
since the registration or lack thereof by a 3rd-party security application determines whether Windows Defender remains active for Real-time protection.

Since MBAM 3.0 was released not long ago, there have been a few issues identified with its operation, so if you are experiencing any continued issues with your configuration with Defender you should be submitting these for discussion in the MBAM forums instead,
since they are better informed about the specifics for these.

@HippsieGypsie, sorry for the late reply, the last step of DISM (ISO Download) took me a while. Anyhow I tried all of them with no results.<br>This account is a Microsoft administrative account. The other is a local account called Administrator which was created after the latest major update.

That's ok. We're all busy with the holidays. *Smile

Can't for the life of me understand why it doesn't register Defender. We know it's installed via the other account.

Is the Microsoft administrative account the original account or was it created after feature update or install?

Do you have other antivirus installed?

I'm quite sure you did, but to be absolutely sure > You did the in-place upgrade within the Microsoft administrative account?

Is that other account important to you so to delete it and do repairs?

Yes, it is the original account. The other titled "Administrator" was created after Fall's Creator's Update(It is undeletable btw).
I did have Malwarebytes installed but I uninstalled it when I found out it could conflict with Defender.
Typically I would not mind deleting the account and copying my Appdata over to another account but my Windows has not been communicating with Microsoft Servers for some reason and so I'm scared I won't be able to sign back in. I changed my Microsoft password 2 days ago and Account login still hasn't reflected that change.

Ok so you have a lot more going on. Don't mind me, but so much for 3rd party apps. *sarc

    The OS is activated, yes?

Can you log into your MS account online?

Any other apps you may have installed recently?

Not understanding why the created admin account cannot be deleted if you created it, unless it's beyond my knowledge.

Malwarebytes was a last resort for a while back, I used to turn my nose up at anti-viruses before a virus up and crippled my PC *Biggrin.
    The OS is activated.
I can login to MS Account online.
I've installed a store app or two once I found out about the [start "" "ms-windows-store:"] command (my Store icon up and vanished on me in one of the updates and has not been seen since)
I'm sorry for not being clearer. The local account termed "Administrator" was created by windows after the Falls Creator's Update.

Personal choice, but I've been using Defender since inception back in W7. Never any problems.

Why in the hey would it create a local admin account updating to FCU?! That's plain bizarre. *really

There certainly is conflict going on with that fact. Seems like it's treating the first account as 2nd class now.

Not sure if it's possible to move the appdata from the MS account over to the local one, delete the MS account, then make the local account an MS one. Probably not, but worth the thought.

Personally I'd back everything up, wipe the drive, and clean install.

Well, I deleted my old account and made another one. I learned that you don't simply copy the appdata over(Microsoft appdata will corrupt modern apps) but other than that little hiccup, transition was smooth. Defender is working now. As I feared, I can't login to Microsoft anymore. I delayed replying for a few days in the hopes that some solution online would fix it but it didn't work out. Eh the grapes are sour anyways *Biggrin. Anyhow thanks a lot for your help.
    -EDIT-
Oh and that admin account is apparently an inbuilt one that all Win 10 installations have.

You're welcome. Sorry we couldn't get it fully fixed if you can't sign in. I didn't think moving appdata would work. And, yes, there's a hidden Admin account in 10 as in past OSs.

What are you going to do from here?
