Windows 10: Registry Cleaning

Discus and support Registry Cleaning in Windows 10 Performance & Maintenance to solve the problem; Modern OS's don't need registry cleaning. I've run the same install on my windows 7 machine since it came out. No degradation of performance. Me:... Discussion in 'Windows 10 Performance & Maintenance' started by TreeMeister, Aug 7, 2015.

Me: from 2010 up until last week when I upgraded. same install image basically, because I imaged after big changes and at least 2 weeks after patch Tuesday. Only after testing software did I need to reimage back.

Like I said, the benefits for each individual instance of cleaning and defragging may be very small, but the cumulative benefits do stack up. Your registry loads into memory at every boot. Keeping it smaller has to make that loading go faster. It just makes sense.

I have never heard of Puran. Open Source?

I have also never used a registry cleaning utility of any sort. The mere thought of doing that automatically kind of freaks me out.

Oh yeah, a secret to fast defragging very large disks... Create an image, destroy your partition, then reimage your disk, windows will put every thing where it belongs in one clean unfragmented image. But this is only worthwhile for 750GB and above.

Puran is not open source ( personally I don't care for most open source stuff except for 7-Zip). It is provided by Puran Software and is completely free. The software is put out by the well respected Windows guru, Vishal Gupta, who is responsible for coming up with many of the Windows tweaks and fixes that are available (Ask VG). The guy seems to be a genius.

OK, thanks. Never heard of him or the software, and was kind of wary. I appreciate the information!

  7. Just a note, KB3081440 does registry cleaning in order to solve problem installing KB3081424. *Nerd
In other words, people using registry cleaners, would not have this issue. Thought, you should know.

I use CCleaner along WiseCare for years, they solved/prevented many issues, obviously.

    Registry Cleaning

when i use Auslogics registry cleaner that is included in Boost Speed
it cleaned out a bucketload of registry keys
then after a reboot i couldn't use the search feature and the volume slider wouldn't work
im very hesitant to use it again in windows 10
anyone else had these sorts of issues?

    Doesn't surprise me at all.
I don't have those kinds of issues because I don't clean out the Registry; it's not supposed to be cleaned out.

In my opinion, no. Leave it alone.
You'll encounter far less problems and fix far more issues 'rebuilding' the registry by performing a clean install.

I think this is something people disagree on.

In the past, I never used a registry cleaner, until my laptop became so sluggish, that I could hardly work on it. At this point, someone I knew, told me to use CCleaner to clean the registry as well. I already used it to delete unwanted files, but I didn't dare to run the registry cleaning part of it. (I also heard horror stories about it, but... with different programs.)

With a system that was about ready to receive a clean install again; I just thought, "What the heck!", and went for it.

Well, I was glad that I took the risk, because it found +1000 registry items that it could delete. With a small hearth, I clicked on fix it all, and held in my breath until I rebooted my system and immediately noticed its start-up was improved... A LOT.

Once logged in, I checked a few programs and was amassed with the speed increase.

Although, I also have a horror story, but not with CCleaner. A while back, I used iolo system mechanic for an automated solution to keep my system clean and properly working. It worked very well on Windows 7, and even Windows Vista. However, the days after I upgraded to Windows 8, the program scared it so much, that a lot of things didn't work properly anymore, even to the point that I had to do a clean install.

I think Microsoft had some new stuff in the registry iolo's software didn't know about at the time, and deleted it because it thought it was lines the system didn't need. Shortly after my disaster, they brought out an update, which made the program safe again.

What I want to say with all of this is... Some registry cleaners are safe to use, and they do help to keep your system fit, but always try to use those which give you the option to save the changes it is planning to do. CCleaner does this, and it's a good thing. BTW, iolo's software also does this, but at the time, I was more inclined to do a clean install for my system. It needed it anyway after the upgrade. *Wink (I did use the restore function on a laptop, and it fixed the problems it had created, as well.)

The past few years, with Windows 8/8.1, I used CCleaner monthly and never had a problem with it. It kept my systems running smoothly and without a hassle.

    Registry Cleaning

CCleaner registry cleaner is pretty safe to use because it usually doesn't "dig" too deep to avoid problems. On the other hand, a newly installed OS might not need a registry cleanup at all. And by all means, don't clean the registry at all if you want to be on the safe side.

PS. I always clean mine with CC though. I am such a geek. Never had any issues.

PS2. Another history is to defrag and compact the registry. It may give you a slightly speed boost.

I hate CCleaner *Mad . Used it once and it deleted all my Google Chrome history and all my open tabs of which I normally have about six . Never again!

If you had Chrome sync'd they would have been rebuilt the next time you opened the browser.
