Thank-you for confirming that I did the right thing by uninstalling my IOBit Uninstaller program today. It seemed to be fetching additional undesired software and also constantly running in the background. Revo Uninstaller showed over 30 registry entries and miscellaneous items were left behind, which I deleted.

I agree about Iobit and Baidu but Auslogics has fine products. I used to use their defragger until I found Puran, which is better. I now use their registry cleaner on the highest settings about once a month. It automatically backs up any changes it makes but I have never had to use a backup. It's far more thorough than CCleaner and for me, has been just as safe.

When I analyze my disk with Puran Defrag and it shows that the registry, page file, or master boot record is fragmented, I run a boot time scan and it fixes all of those. It's optimization option is also excellent. I run all of these things on all the computers in this house (4 of them with 4 different flavors of Windows) and never have a problem with any.

  3. I regularly used CCleaner and Ghostbuster with Windows 7, just started again with 10. Really useful after removing software and hardware respectively.

My experience has been just the reverse of some of the respondents here. I've used CCleaner for years, and never had a problem until I updated to Windows 10. And it wasn't the registry cleaner of CCleaner that gave me problems--it was some files it deleted that made my Start button stop working completely. I've searched around and seen that others have had the same exact issue.

I'm still not sure which files got deleted to cause the problem. But I use CCEnhancer, so it probably was not the built-in CCleaner items that caused the heartache.

I do use CCleaner for registry cleaning. I know it does not make a performance difference, but it pleases me in a neurotic sense. I also know enough about the registry that I'm pretty good at knowing ahead of time what could cause problems. I also backup my registry.

Unlike some junky registry cleaners, CCleaner is pretty conservative about what it deletes. Pretty much everything it offers to delete is due to missing files.

The Registry loads on boot up/the bigger it gets, the more memory it uses/the more memory used, technically the slower the system. The Registry is read with each boot up. You have a registry with 1,800 errors (not an exceptionally large amount). Each error is read and found to be an error and then to the next line in the Registry, and so forth and so on until the Registry is read. [I am just picking number here!] - your registry is 25MB and full of old errors, mine is 10MB with maybe 10 errors - and there is absolutely no difference in performance???
I use Ccleaner to clean the Registry and have for years. Never had a problem and over the years with new O/S's, programs, updates, uninstalls, etc. have removed literally thousands of Registry errors. And all of this has been for naught? Well, I must say, you could have fooled me!

    Registry Cleaning

Windows doesn't parse the entire registry and waste processing time or memory just because some files referenced in it don't exist. The only time your processor or memory are used on such things is when you run a registry cleaner. But I'm not going to argue the point at length. I'm not absolutely opposed to registry cleaners (not good ones like CCleaner anyway), and I like deleting invalid firewall rules and that sort of thing.

CCleaner is and always has been a mild registry cleaner. That's main reason why it would not harm someones computer unless it had other problems going on. Doesn't do any deep cleaning of your registry.

  10. I gave Auslogics cleaner a try yesterday; found 2500 errors. I like the way it categorises them, they all seemed sensible to fix.

    We shall see ...

I agree completely. The performance difference is imperceptible if done regularly, but do it on a system that hasn't been cleaned for years and you notice a difference immediately.

    Registry Cleaning

I know you asked OldMike65, but just wanted to mention that I run it monthly. I make a disk image every first of the month and then I use CCleaner on it.

Why not before? You properly think... You never know if a new version of CCleaner doesn't have a bug in it. This way, I'm safe. *Wink

Me....I run CCleaner maybe 4 or 5 times daily, also run Glary Utilities about the same amount. Sounds like a lot maybe to some folks, but takes about 20 sec's. or less. Have been doing this for years. Keeps my puter, running pretty good. *Wink
