  1. Reinstall of Windows 10 Home

My wife's HP TouchSmart 600 All-In-One PC was behaving irradicably, with frequent screen freezes and high CPU usage. I attempted to repair her OS, Windows 10 Home by following the instructions on this Microsoft site: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/12415/windows-10-recovery-options. I attempted the Reset process as described, by going to Settings/Update & Security/Recovery/Reset. I tried both the Keep My Files and the Remove Everything options. In both cases, after allowing the processes to run for more that hour for each option, I gave up to move to the next suggested option, Use a recovery drive to restore or reset your PC. After preparing a thumb drive from another PC, I followed the directions again with both options, Restore and Recover. Again after allowing each to run for over an hour, I chose the option to shut down the PC. Then, tried next option, Use installation media to restore or reset your PC. When I chose the option, Reset this PC, I received a message telling me that this option was not available for my PC. Finally, I tried the most extreme of steps, Use installation media to reinstall Windows 10. I used another PC to download the Windows 10 media creation tool and used it to create a thumb drive with a 64-bit version of Windows 10 Home, the OS on wife's PC which had the problems. After moving through the steps in preparation for the reinstallation, I was prompted to choose the partition on which to reinstall Windows 10 Home. I chose the same partition on which it had been installed previously. I received a message, windows cannot be installed on this disk. The selected disk is of the GPT partition style. Now, after attempting to reboot my wife's PC, it will not boot beyond the BIOS prompt screen, and thus no Windows 10 at all.

I have no idea what to do next. I have read about changing the boot in BIOS to legacy. I cannot find that option in the BIOS of my wife's PC. I have also read some posts about UEFI. I do not understand anything about that now can I find such a boot option on her PC.

I am willing to clear or clean the partition which has the original Window 10 on it, using GParted or other software. But then what? Will I still be able to install Windows 10 without a license? The original OS on my wife's PC was Windows 8, and we used the free upgrade offer years ago.

    :)

[Solved] Windows 10 keeps reinstalling KB3119142

I noticed quite some time ago that KB3119142 (Update for Microsoft Visual C++ 2012 Update 4 Redistributable Package) kept reinstalling itself for some reason. At least once daily. Sometimes up to several times a day. I just ignored it. It didn't seem to be doing any harm. And I figured they'd eventually fix it. Well...days turned into weeks, weeks into months, with no end to the problem in sight. It dragged on unsolved for at least the last few months. Literally reinstalling itself hundreds of(at least a hundred, felt like more) times in that period of time.

So I finally googled it a couple days ago. And just got around to fixing it today. Which appears to have worked. And it couldn't have been easier to do. I feel so stupid to have let it intimidate me for so long.*Oops! Reinstall of Windows 10 Home
Below are links to the thread that I got the fix idea from, and the official MS support info page for KB3119142(from which I quoted the above).

    Windows 10 Tweaks

Pressing “Windows+Pause Break” (it’s up there next to scroll lock) opens the “System” Window.

Windows 10: In the new version of Windows, Explorer has a section called Quick Access. This includes your frequent folders and recent files. Explorer defaults to opening this page when you open a new window. If you’d rather open the usual This PC, with links to your drives and library folders, follow these steps:

    • Open a new Explorer window.
    • Click View in the ribbon.
    • Click Options.
    • Under General, next to “Open File Explorer to:” choose “This PC.”
    • Click OK
