Windows 10: Remember window position?

I forgot to mention that I tried using the .exe file that is supposed to sense which version you have, either 32 or 64bit but it would not work.

Since I am using the 64bit version of Windows 10 Pro, I downloaded the 64bit version and it works great *Smile

 

I disagree. the video shows what I am used to: opening, repositioning and reopening windows. specifically the windows explorer. the video shows that a reopened windows explorer window is opened in the same position it was closed last. >>if you have multiple windows open then the position of the last closed window is remembered and reopening the windows explorer window will open it in the position where the last windows was closed.<<

I wouldn't be complaining if win 10 did this. actually I've come to terms with this issue. I figure that microsoft has to fix this irregular behavior. it doesn't bother me enough that I will turn to a 3rd party program. and reopening the windows explorer window is only off by the height of the title bar offset to the right by a bit... but it still annoys me that the windows explorer and the microsoft edge window have this irregular behavior.

 

This annoyance (or bug, or whatever you prefer to call it) doesn't happen on my computer running Windows 10 and I think I know why...

I have installed the Directory Opus file manager, and it is set to be the default program for opening folders. For example in Firefox, if I right click on a filename in the download history and click "open containing folder" it opens that folder in D Opus (which thankfully always remembers its last used window position).

Although it is no longer my default file manager, I can still run Microsoft's File Explorer from it's icon on the task bar. It always goes to exactly the same size and position it was in when I closed it. *Smile

Instead of spending a small fortune on Directory Opus, maybe you can achieve the same result with any freeware or inexpensive file manager -- provided it can set itself as the default program for opening folders.

ETA... That doesn't mean you actually have to use the alternative program after inastalling it, if you prefer Windows own File Explorer - though you might come to enjoy the extra features in one such as xplorer2 or xyplorer.

 

A simple workaround... Get into the habit of minimizing File Explorer instead of closing it.

...when this happened..
by right clicking on an entry you have the option of opening the directory -it opens the location in a windows explorer window-. I did this a few times and then I thought to myself "the windows weren't scattered across the monitor. did each window open in the same location?" yes! they did.

it seems that the issue -why is it that the win 10 windows explorer deliberately adjusts itself to be "cascaded" off of it's old location when reopened- only happens when the windows explorer window is open in a specific way.. so far what I have found out is: when you open the windows explorer window by using the taskbar or by pressing the 'win button+e' or 'win button+corresponding number' [for me it's win+1] the window jumps around.. if you instead open the windows explorer window by right clicking you mouse in the lower left corner and choose 'File Explorer' each consecutive window will open in the last position the previous window was closed.

well.. either you're annoyed by this or you aren't. either you find a different way of opening the File Explorer to keep it from jumping around or you

This new behaviour is also frustrating me. In Windows 7 / 8 / 8.1, Windows Explorer would always open a new window in the same position, and with the same size, as the last-closed window one had open. In Windows 10, it remembers the size, but forgets the positioning.

I often have a horizontal Explorer window at the bottom of my screen, just above the taskbar, where it's not too intrusive and doesn't interfere with menus in other apps, browser addresses, etc. I'm used to Windows opening a window there every time I press CTRL + E. In Windows 10, every time I press CTRL + E, or choose File Explorer from the bottom-left right-click menu, or even open a folder from a shortcut, the freakin' window appears at the top of my screen. Sure, they cascade neatly downward after that. But I should have a choice as to whether this happens. Having become so used to the behaviour in 7/8, this change in 10 is pretty damn irritating.

 

I have discovered why this annoyance doesn't happen on my computer.
Explorer windows always open at exactly the same position here because I have the Taskbar at the top of the screen. If I move the Taskbar to the bottom, then when I open a File Explorer it is a bit lower and to the right, from where it was when I closed it.

I moved the Taskbar back to the top which I prefer and again the problem disappears.

 

That's great, but what about those of us who want our Taskbar at the bottom? i.e. where it is by default. *Smile I never had to move my Taskbar around in Windows XP/Vista/7/8 to get Explorer windows to remember where they were when they closed.

Please try the following :
1 Open File Explorer
2 Click and hold CTRL Key while you adjust File Explorer to your liking (size, position)
3 When done with the Manual adjusting, head to File then xClose and release CTRL
4 Relaunch File Explorer to verify it is keeping your setup.
5 Optional Reboot to make sure your changes are sticky

I have tested over and over to make sure it does work on my Windows 10 x64.
Please avoid the SNAP feature while performing this, do every step manually.

Do you have your taskbar in a location other than the bottom? If so, that is why it works for you.
