  1. Removed password on windows 8, will it affect windows 10 install?

I had found a site that showed me how to remove the login password request from my windows 8 laptop. I don't remember what site I got this information from but now I'm concerned this will affect my windows 10 installation somehow.

Can anyone help with this please? I'm not planning a clean install as I have too many files to back up.

    :)

Removed password on windows 8, will it affect windows 10 install?

Since you can't remember how you removed the password, we can't tell you what affect it will have on the Windows 10 upgrade. What I would do if it were my computer:

Create a new LOCAL user account:
User Account - Add a New User in Windows 8

make sure to change the new local user account to administrator type. Make sure to log on to the new local user account. Then do the upgrade to Windows 10. That way you will ensure that you have an account you can log in to on Windows 10, and if your usual account stays active the way that you want it to, you can just delete the new local user account you created.

  5. Thanks!

Would you suggest I try to restore the login option before I try this method? Or will I get indefinitely locked out of my account?

At the worst you will have to log in to Windows 10 with the new account and reset the password on your original user account if you get locked out of it. That's why I recommend to make sure to change the new local user account to the administrator type.

You can try this to restore the login Option in your account..
    1. Run cmd as admin
    2. Type Netplwiz
    3. Check the box user must enter password.
    Redirect Notice

    4. Now enter your user name (as Msaccount email) and password. You will be asked for password on next login

  9. Most likely this is the way I disabled the login. I even went into command prompt and typed in doskey /history in hopes of finding the exact prompt I may have used but I guess this only works on the current session history.

Anyway, I did not have an MS account, just a local account. I do remember my password but I believe it won't work. When I removed the password option, I had windows 8. Then I upgraded to windows 8.1. Until I had windows 8, I could access the store but after upgrading to windows 8.1, it required me to login. It would ask me to connect with my local account and enter a password. When I type in said password, it would prompt me that my password was incorrect and I should try again. I'm not sure why it thinks the password is incorrect. Shouldn't the password be stored somewhere on the computer? I don't see how upgrading to 8.1 should affect this. Unless removing the password option is why this error is occurring.

So I have some questions regarding what you've suggested.

If I do check the enter username and password option, will it accept my old password? What if it says that password is incorrect? Do I simply uncheck the box? Or can I enter any password and it'll accept it?

I found a bunch of sites on how to remove the login but none on how to restore it in this situation.

And that is exactly why I am recommending that you create an additional administrator local user account while you still have administrator access on your current account. If you manage to re-enable your current account's password and then you discover that the password you think is there doesn't work - with the single administrator user account you are going to find yourself locked out of your computer.

  11. I believe I remember what I had done and perhaps why the password doesn't work.

I had gone into the registry editor and probably edited the "AutoAdminLogon" data within the Winlogon field. The "DefaultPassword" string isn't present as I had probably deleted it (I've navigated to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon). This could be why the password isn't working in the store.

    Does this information help?

I'm planning on simply adding a password string and typing in my password. I won't change the Auto Logon data from 1 to 0 for now. I'll simply check if that password works in the store. That'll let me know if I'm on the right track of solving this problem.

I'm not sure if outside links are allowed but I'm basing off of what's given here: Log On User Account Automatically at Windows 8 Startup

Sort of. I want to know if the password would work once I reactivate it. Could you rephrase the process of changing the password through command prompt?

  14. I've tried other methods and it won't work. It refuses to accept my password which I'm certain was correct. I don't know why I'm running into this error. Can you guide me on how I can create a second account with administrator access?

EDIT: I just saw the guide you had posted earlier. Thank you! Looking into it now.
