Not sure why it is happening, I just know I have read lots of threads that it has happened to others.

  3. Strange why they give this advice in order to remove the auto logon if there's no way to restore it. If deleting the password string creates the problem then recreating the password string should logically resolve it. Sigh. I'm not sure whether I'll still be able to upgrade and if the trouble is worth taking at this point.

Okay, I've successfully created a second admin account. Before I continue with the install, I have 2 questions:
    1. I currently have the autoadminlogon to 1 and had created a password field for my original admin account. Do I need to make any changes to this?
    2. Should I logon to the new admin account and then start the upgrade to windows 10?

    1. I really have no idea about that. I would leave it as is.

    2. Yes.

  6. I figured out my password! I was guessing it wrong all along. Next step of restoring the login should be easier hopefully. Will update shortly.

Update: I was simply lucky because I could guess my password. I made sure not to log myself out. Creating a second admin account was helpful even though I never used it. I tested my password guesses by going into PC settings, accounts, sign-in options and then attempting to change the password. One finally worked. I then removed the autologon in the registry and went back into accounts and linked my account to my Microsoft account. Benefit of this is you can change your password easily if you forget it. I then restarted my computer which started normally and asked for my Microsoft account login information. Now I'm simply in the process of upgrading to windows 10.

I wish there was an actual solution to a forgotten password but it's not one that I know of yet.
