Windows 10: Removing bcdboot

Hello.

I have 2 physical disks, one with my old Win 7 on it, and a new SSD with Win 10. The latter is (was?) bootable, as I did a clean Win 10 install on it. Later I added a boot menu, using "bcdboot d:\Windows" (where d: is my old Win 7 disk).

Now, however, I want to clean the old Win 7 disk. So, my question effectively is, did using "bcdboot d:\Windows" make my new SSD unbootable somehow? (now that it is using a BCD store on my old drive to boot from). Or is the BCD store even on the old d: drive now?

Removing bcdboot

Easy way to find out is to disconnect the SATA cable from the Windows 7 drive and then see if Windows 10 boots. If it does not then your BCD store is definitely on the Windows 7 drive.

Removing bcdboot

I recently added a boot menu in Windows 10, using "bcdboot d:\Windows" (where d: is my old Win 7 install). I'd like to remove the old Windows 7 directories (on d, though, and thus (obviously) just boot from c: (my current Win 10).

Can I savely remove the old Windows 7 directories, though? (d:\Windows). I'd hate not being able to boot up any more as a result.

I would say, the SSD is still bootable if made the first disk in the boot order. Have you tried it by disconnecting the other disk D:?

 

For us to be sure to provide the correct answer, you will need to post a screenshot of Disk Management for us to see:

Make sure to expand the columns so we can read all the info in them.

That will also work. Pull the power connector off the second disk and if the computer boots OK with just the SSD connected, then you are safe to format the second hard drive. Use Win + R key to open run dialog, run MSCONFIG. Select the Boot tab. There you can delete the entry for the second operating system you no longer want the option for. Then just click apply or save. You do NOT need to check the box for make boot options permanent.
