Windows 10: Rename user folder?

Hello.

I guess since i installed windows 10 using my microsoft account, my user folder got named after my microsoft mail, or some part of it anyway. So am wondering if it's possible to rename the user folder somehow?

Thank you for posting your query on Microsoft Community.

You are trying to rename the User folder, which can’t be done through the File explorer. Whatever user name you use of your User account, user account folder will have same name. You can rename the Subfolder of the User account folder but not User
account folder.

If you want rename the User account folder, change user account name using the suggestion

Lets’ refer to these steps to rename the User account and check if that helps.

• Press Windows and X keys together.
• Click on Control Panel, click on User Accounts.
• Click on User account, then click on “Change your account name”
• If it’s prompting for password please enter and click on Yes. If you do not have password click on
  Yes.
• Enter the new user name.
• Click on change name.

Renaming the users folders

Hello!

Is it possible ton rename the user folder without generating a mess in the system? Here is an example to explain my question:

Let's say the user's name is Sebastian. When Windows is creating an new account on a computer, the system creates a folder called 'sebast' in C:\Users. (C:\Users\sebast)

If Sebastian wants to rename this folder in C:\Users\Sebastian (for aesthetic reason), is it possible? How?

Not really. Once its created, there are so many registry entries that point to it, it is basically impossible to change. You can always create a new local account with the name you want, then associate it with your MS account.

 

You can still rename your userid via Control Panel but this is only cosmetic, as, like Mystere says, the actual folder name will stay the same. But, at least, when asked to login to your local account you will see the 'new' name!

Granted, this is not much use if you log in to an MS account.

Must say, on my test comp, I got caught with this account name thing, too.

 

Yeah, It's crazy that Setup does not ask for a username first before using the MSA email first few letters as a username. Send lots of feedback, complain to Insiders hub, Windows Answers, and Technet, and upvote all the other folks posts that are unhappy with this. Otherwise, nothing will be done about it.

Edit. There are so many requests for this I am sure they have got the message!

 

I dunno - if they still used paper for memos, they probably would use them for loo paper!

 

99.9% of users would never care or even know this folder exists. And, since it's crazy easy to get whatever folder name you want, I don't see MS changing this.

 

I'm a female and my name is - so my folder is "bryan" which I don't really like. Seriously MS? Seriously?

 

Well it doesn't look good, as other have stated before. Only thing i can think of is making a new account, but again that's really not the solution am after. Did try out some "solutions" others had posted on different sites, mainly this: User Profile Folder - Change User Account Folder Name - Windows 7 Help Forums and this: microsoft account - How to rename user folder in Windows 8? - Super User but non of them worked for me, had to do a system restore, so make one before if you decide do give it a try.

 

yeah.. none of this worked for me either and had to do a clean install due to it not working properly..
hopefully a solution or a fix will be out soon or later.

Hi, it botherd me as well. Here's what I did, most won't do this, but I didn't like it so I just formatted my pc and instead of living in with my Microsoft account, I chose SKIP THIS STEP and created a local user account. After I was on the desktop, I then signed into my Microsoft account and the problem was solved. Again, not everyone will do it this way, but the other ways (Registry Edits) didn't work to well.

Microsoft should fix this issue!
