Is it possible to create a Macrium backup image without including all my personal files (backed up elsewhere)? I have a 500 gig external drive I can use for the image, but with all my files my system is rather larger than that.

    Yes that will work.
One layer or backup is fine.
    Two is even better.

  3. Is there a way to do this? My personal files are on C:, and I don't see an obvious way to disentangle those from the system files I want to image with Macrium Reflect.

To backup individual files you can copy and paste the Users folder.
That is one layer of backup.
The second layer of backup is an image or a clone.
There are two versions of Macrium.
The free edition has limited features.
What you are looking for may be available in the paid edition.
See this link: Backup and Restore with Macrium Reflect Windows 10 Tutorials
For Macrium Dalchina is an expert and he may be able to make more comments.

    1) Operating system and drive file system look good.

    2) Open disk management > widen the columns for each status and volume > make sure that the contents in each row is in full view and nothing is cut off in any of the rows > post an image into the thread

Chkdsk /x /f /r will run up to a low number in the teens and remain there until the fix and restore is completed.
The duration of time depends on the problems found, the size of the drive and the amount of free space.

The partition letter assign U was not seen on the above post.
After chkdsk completes the partition can be checked.

    Looks good.
Sometimes assigned letters may become unassigned after reboot.
Check to see if volume 2 still has the letter U by these commands and if it does then remove the letter U.
Please use a camera or smart phone camera to take pictures and post images into the thread.
Open administrative command prompt and type or copy and paste:
    1) diskpart
    2) list disk
    3) list volume
    4) select disk 0
    5) list partition
    6) select volume 2
    7) detail volume
    8) remove letter=U
    9) exit

Sorry for the delay; last week was crazily busy, and I also for some reason didn't see a notification about your response.

I followed the steps and got "Virtual Disk Service error: The specified drive letter is invalid." The only difference I saw from the image in post #70 is that under "list volume," Volume 1 now says Boot and Volume 2 now says System under Info.

My computer still works fine, but I have kept it offline to prevent the forced Windows update.
