Good morning, maranna. You may want to consider security as well. e.g. The hack of Yahoo servers. Whichever you use you may want to look into that as well. Is data to and fro encrypted, any news about their system getting hacked, etc.

Personally I have one MS account with an alias address. I don't trust everyone with my address and it's simple for me to manage. My main address I use for important things like banking, utilities, eBay, etc. accounts. The other I use for what I call junk sites I may try out. If emails get overwhelming there I simply create a new one, register that address for sites I want to keep (very few), and delete the other alias address. It all comes into one box to easily manage as well.

Of course, Microsoft Office has Outlook as your email client, but for (hypothetical) those who don't have Office, there's Mail built into Windows 10. Also, Outlook.com (Sign in to your Microsoft account) is Microsoft's online mail client and doesn't need MS Office to work. As well, there is Mozilla (think Firefox) Thunderbird, (Thunderbird — Software made to make email easier. — Mozilla).

For the record, I'm not very familiar with these, since I have always had Outlook with my Office 365 subscription, which I keep because I have three computers and a tablet. I do know that all of them allow multiple email addresses, though.

So, you have choices, Maranna. I hope this information is helpful to you.

@ HG - Thank you for your information. It was worth while reading.
@Wy - All of these Outlook's are confusing - *Smile.
I have one I believe is built into Windows Mail. I am not sure which it is.
I also have Outlook.com that is web based I believe which uses my MS sign in.
So, I have 2 MS accounts which sign in the same. One is web and the other is Windows Mail, a Gmail for my phone and an ISP one.
Without MS office which would I lose?

I tried Thunderbird before and it is too hard for me.

None of the above, Maranna. If I'm not mistaken, Microsoft is trying to merge Outlook and Outlook.com. So, you'd lose Outlook 2010, but as far as I know, everything from Outlook 2010 would remain intact in Outlook.com. You're probably right that Windows Mail is a form of Outlook.com.

BTW, I had forgotten about Gmail. You can also have multiple email addresses in it too.

Yeah, Outlook and VPN haven't played together real well (in process of testing solutions), so I tried Thunderbird. There is definitely a learning curve, but those who use it say it's really great. I'm going to give it another try later. Quite frankly, I think it's all in what we get used to using. I used it several generations ago, and I remember that I really liked it. Many changes since then that I haven't kept up with. *Sad

I realize to each their own and thanks, maranna, but I don't click on Google links. Avoid them as much as possible. Don't like the company.

FYI the email clients Outlook.com site, Office Outlook (whether stand alone or Office suite), and Windows 10/8/8.1 Store/UWP Mail app all send/receive mail via one's MS account to and from MS Exchange servers. There's no combining anything.

replace MS office Home and Student 2010 with Libre office

    Hi there
Outlook.com doesn't play nicely with multiple accounts - especially from different business clients using exchange servers.
Outlook 2010 (from office) or outlook 2016 (from office 2016 / 365) don't really IMO have any sensible alternatives with possible exception of thunderbird - which while it has a little learning curve has all the features of outlook featured in ms office with regard to multiple accounts (and from exchange servers too).

My main gripe with both latest version of thunderbird and office 2016 with latest version of outlook (outlook 2010 was OK) is that the software designers have tried to simplify the thing so much that if you don't have bog standard mail servers it's almost impossible to set the thing up manually. I have different incoming and outgoing mail servers with different passwords etc and it's been impossible to set in outlook 2016 --works a breeze on outlook 2010 and an older release of thunderbird.

Upgrading to outlook 2016 fixes the problem as the update takes the connections from outlook 2010 -- but I really don't like this trend towards making every thing too simple -- if anything is slightly non standard you are hosed.

Same issue with skype - new version won't allow me to select webcam so refused to work with video -- older classic version had dropdown where I could select the one I've got installed - don't know why Windows thinks I have 2 - could be the video card thinks there's one !!.

Not against new software or decent updates - but not this over simplification stuff -- give people option for complete manual install or auto install.

    Cheers

When both phones are Android and you have a Chromebook besides Windows desktop Gmail is a necessity.
I was always a Windows fan and never liked Google but times are changing and so are my needs.
I'll wait a while to see what happens with Office 2010 and the desktop client.

    Hi there @maranna

not sure why you have to have GMAIL.

If your OUTLOOK (ms office versions) is set to use IMAP rather than the older POP3 mail stays on the server until you delete it. The same mail is accessible on Android mobiles (I have a Samsung s8 -- have had other samsungs before) and the built in email client accesses the same email as outlook gets.

Don't know about tablets as I don't use them but I can't see any problems with using Android standard email on these devices. So long as on your computer you enable IMAP all your emails are accessible from whatever device you happen to be using. You need to ensure also on all phones the email app is set to IMAP when you set up the incoming and outgoing Mails server parameters in the configuration.

There's no need to use GMAIL for this purpose -- however if you LIKE GMAIL then of course that's your call. I HATE web based email clients anyway and am not a fan of Google.

Outlook also works with exchange servers (work type email) and no limit to number of accounts. So even email from work exchange servers can be accessed from your android device without problem --the trick is to use IMAP.

Another advantage of using OUTLOOK (from ms Office) is that it integrates easily with SKYPE if you use those sorts of applications.

    Cheers

    Hi Jimbo
When you do anything with an android phone and other Google products, you are asked to enter your Gmail account all the time. Gmail makes Android tick.
There are so many outlooks it is confusing. I have the web based outlook.com=@live.com. I also have Windows mail. Then there is my ISP[Comcast] account.
I cannot afford Outlook paid by MS.I am not speaking as one who knows but as one who is confused. What I wrote is all I can tell you.

I think MS office Home and Student is a one time purchase for $149.00 and that is all one pays. This is not just for a year, correct?

Actually, you can have it both ways, Maranna. Here's a link to the choices you have.

Since I have a desktop, two laptops and a tablet, I have Office 365 ProPlus (Business), but if I didn't go that route, the subscription to Home (basically the same as home and student) would suffice.

Sounds about right. I paid 109 for Office 2010 Home and Student in 2011.

It lasts for ever (not just one year) and can be installed on up to 3 separate devices at the same time. It doesn't include Outlook though - just Work, Excel, Powerpoint. If you want the Outlook program you need the (more expensive) Professional version (again a one off charge) or get the Office 365 annual subscription.
