Windows 10: Rescue data from USB stick?

My USB stick is no longer recognized by my PC and all others and should be formatted. When I go to the disk management, the stick is displayed, but in RAW format and only with 8MB storage space although it has 2GB. Some data recovery programs like EaseUS or Recuva can't find the stick or can't read the file system. TEST DISK can read the faulty stick but only this 8MB (my guess) which unfortunately does not help me. Should I format the stick into new partitions via the console and then scan it again with the programs and try to get files? Or senseless procedure because everything is already gone anyway?

Well, I'm sorry to hear that it's a WD My Passport that failed on you, @tomhenry ! *Frown
I'd recommend you to try using a different USB cable with it and see if that will help your system to detect it without it disconnecting.
I'd also suggest you to go to Disk Management and see how the drive is listed there. It won't hurt to check up on the health and SMART status of the HDD by running the QUICK and EXTENDED tests from the WD's Data LifeGuard Diagnostics. Convert Windows 10 from Legacy BIOS to UEFI without Data Loss

Here it is:

Asumming you already have:
1) Windows Installation USB/DVD
2) Macrium Rescue disk.

Here's a step by step procedure:

Create a backup image of the whole disk to another external/internal disk and don't forget to verify it.

Boot up Windows installation disk, hold SHIFT+F10 to get the command Windows and type:
diskpart
list disk
select disk # where # is the SSD of current Windows
clean
exit
exit

Click Next and select Custom then continue to install Windows, when get to the screen below, select the unallocated partition then click Next (do not format)

On next screen below. After getting the check mark on the first item, click on the red X to cancel the installation, turn off the PC:
This should create:
500MB Recovery, 100MB EFI System, 16MB and C drive with not much data in it, you will restore the original C drive on next step.

Now boot up the Macrium Rescue disk, select the image from step 1, and select the SSD as destination disk.

Click on C partition of destination then click on "Delete this partition".

Drag and Drop the C partition from source to destination.

Once done, click on "Fix Windows boot problems"

Get into BIOS and select UEFI to boot from GPT disk.

Boot into Windows, you are now running Windows with GPT disk.

The procedure should not take long, 30 minutes at most. HTH.

Gigabyte Mobo not booting from usb

I believe you have formatted the USB-key wrong. You can try to follow this walkthrough, Creating Windows UEFI Boot-Stick in Windows - Thomas-Krenn-Wiki Note: it has to be formatted to FAT32 for UEFI BIOS. dont use NTFS

Will try this, I was currently read that article only.

But why didnt the kespersky rescue USB work ?, it was Fat32.
But I definitely will try the method listed in that article and will then use the official kespersky tool for making rescue disk and try again.
