  1. Reset S.M.A.R.T. status

My secondary hard-drive is failing, or so Win 10 tells me every time I boot.

Now, when I reset my computer there is an additional POST screen where I have to press Enter to acknowledge that my drive is failing.

A S.M.A.R.T. report says I have these problems:

    • Reallocated Sectors Count - Real Value: 163,668,352; Current: 1; Worst: 1; Threshold: 5
    • Uncorrectable Sector Count - Real Value: 0; Current: 100; Worst: 100; Threshold: 0

It very well might be failing. I am not sure it is. The problems only started when I installed this as a secondary drive in Win 10. It worked fine in multiple rigs before that. After install on this rig (note this was the drive that originally came with this machine, but I replaced it with the EVO SSD and it did duty elsewhere, until it wasn't needed anymore) it used to make this horrendous clicking like the platters inside were hitting something. Think a Roomba stuck in a corner. I paid it no mind, and it got worse. It would do this as soon as the computer was powered on (during post and boot). It would stop once Win 10 booted, but over time it started to happen while using the machine as well. So I turned off indexing for that drive, and it hasn't made that noise since.

So, it might actually be failing and I'm fine with that. But I'm going to rock it till the wheels fall off. There's nothing on the drive that I need. It's all media files backed up on another drive.

What I do want, is to have the post screen warning go away. I understand, and acknowledge that my drive is failing, I just want my computer to leave me alone about it, and quit making me jump through an extra hoop to reboot. Sometimes I reboot and walk away, expecting to be fired up and ready to go when I get back, only to come back and have to push [Enter] and sit there and wait for it to boot because I forgot about the "warning" BIOS/POST screen.

    I want that to stop.

    Any suggestions? *Biggrin

    :)

    Reset S.M.A.R.T. status

As you said, it is the secondary HDD, that is the Hitachi one?

If so, test it using WinDFT. If it is really failing, keep it away from the system.

To stop the hardware warnings in BIOS, you may need to seh it throughout the BIOS, because every BIOS setup is different. But better you don't do that and take care of the failing component. That will be wiser decision.

The tools I use to reset hard disks with S.M.A.R.T. warnings every bootup are usually torx screwdrivers of 0 or 00 size, or, I hear hammers are fairly useful in this respect too.
