Reset Windows Update in Windows 10

    Hello tsunami, *Smile

It used to always give you a UAC prompt when opening Task Manager when signed in to an administrator account since it was opening an elevated task manager.

At some point MS changed something that didn't give a UAC prompt anymore, that the .bat file undoes.

You shouldn't get a UAC prompt for them when signed in to a standard user account.

I'd like to give a comment on the Reset_Reregister_Windows_Update_Components.bat script: renaming "%SYSTEMROOT%\WindowsUpdate.log" to WindowsUpdate.log.bak is pointless because on Windows 10 that file contains only the following and it is never changed:

    -- .

Hello rpr, and welcome to Ten Forums. *Smile

I'll leave the old location in the .bat file for those that may still have older builds that still use it.

I have now added this below to the .bat for the new location . Thank you.

    del /s /q /f "%SYSTEMROOT%\Logs\WindowsUpdate\*"

    Shawn / Brink,

1 In the batch file, the path to the qmgr files does not exist [KB971058 has not been changed, it still points to this path]
    "%ALLUSERSPROFILE%\Application Data\Microsoft\Network\Downloader\qmgr*.dat"
    but this one does
    "%ALLUSERSPROFILE%\Microsoft\Network\Downloader\qmgr*.dat"

2 Similarly, I cannot find this file anywhere [I included checking on a computer that had items listed in its download queue at Settings, Update]
    "%SYSTEMROOT%\winsxs\pending.xml

    Any ideas?

    Hello Denis, *Smile

Q1) I actually have the files at both locations in build 14946.

Q2) Here's some more info below about the pending.xml file to help understand it better, but it's basically there to help when a restart is required for an update.

    Brink,

    Thanks for the quick response.

How strange. I clean installed both my computers a couple of months ago so perhaps I would also find both qmgr locations if I hunted around an old system image. I think I'll amend the batch file and see what happens [I'm about to restore a system image anyway so I can afford to do some experiments first].

    About pending.xml - understood.

    Shawn,

I have tested an amended form of the batch file. It now does what I expected it to do. I suggest amending the batch file to include the additional line del /s /q /f "%ALLUSERSPROFILE%\Microsoft\Network\Downloader\qmgr*.dat"
I cannot know how many users have this alternative qmgr location. All I know is that both mine do & neither of them has the qmgr location given in the original batch file. I clean installed Windows 10 on both computers during August.

At the risk of boring you:- 1 The reason I thought something needed to be investigated was that, after running the original batch file [and the many similar ones such as the TechNet version], then manually running Settings, Updates it searched for updates even though it was not connected to the internet or to any other computers and produced results [a list of updates to be downloaded - the listed updates were those that had been found during a previous update search]. So I concluded that the previous queue had not been cleaned out by the batch file.
2 After running an amended batch file that deleted the qmgr files in the alternative location, running Settings, Updates resulted in an almost immediate response that it couldn't connect to the update services [no list of updates was displayed]. This new behaviour makes sense because the computer was still not connected to the internet or any other computers. So, the amended batch file successfully reset Windows update, including the update queue, whereas the original batch file did not.

The subject is of particular significance to me because I use a metered internet connection and I sometimes run Windows update to see if there is anything large enough to warrant going to the free & fast WiFi in my local library. I need to reset the update queue so that I can run Windows update from a clean start - otherwise it would continue with the existing list of updates and only afterwards would it bother to search for new ones [new ones that might supercede those that I have just wasted my time downloading & installing].

Thank you for verifying Denis. I have updated the .bat file in the tutorial to include this location as well. *Smile

  14. Yesterday my Windows Update failed to download updates, so I had to run the .bat file, which could not reset it until I disconnected the modem.

    Hi,

Resetting WU history seems now very easy and fast to do (I'm on Build 14393.576). I just wanted to start the coming year with a clean history, so here's what I did : stopped WU service, emptied the "DataStore" folder ( = 1 "Logs" folder and 2 files), restarted WU service, checked if history was empty and searched for updates. This took only a few minutes ...

Now I wish you all a good start in 2017 !
A BIG thank to all the people involved in this site's maintenance, especially to Brink for all these awesome tutorials. *Smile
