  1. Restore Default File Type Associations in Windows 10

Thanks for the reply and I understand that point. What I am trying to get back to is when one accesses the "reliability monitor", the results are displayed on screen in a format/display that is internal to Windows. See example.

If one clicks on the link at the bottom right, that display is saved "as is" and can be accessed at a later stage in exactly the same format/display as is generated by Windows.

BUT, the moment one accesses that file using any .XML reader/browser, saved Reliability reports are not displayed in the original format anymore.

I want to be able to go back and only access saved reliability reports in the original internal format/display, and not using a .XML reader.

Do you know how or what Windows uses to compile/display the reports in their original format?

  2. I've tried restoring the folders to default following this tutorial but it still tries to open cmd instead of opening the folder whenever I double click on it

Hello hipsterbrig, and welcome to Ten Forums. *Smile

See if also downloading and merging the .reg file for the listed Directory item as well may help.

If not, then you could do a system restore using a restore point dated before this happened to undo it.

I'm not sure other than doing a system restore using a restore point dated before this happened to fix it.

Do you have any idea why I ".zip" is not listed in my "choose default apps by file type"after updating to Windows 10? I have had issues extracting some zip files from one source - but others work -- since updating to Windows 10 and in the process of checking file associations I see that I do not have .zip listed (though do have .z listed). Don't know how to get it listed such that I can check/control the .zip associations. Thanks for any help!

The .zip file extension is not listed by default.

Other than opening a .zip file to see what app (ex: File Explorer) opens it, you can right click on the .zip file, click/tap on "Open with", click/tap on "Choose another app", and see what app it has to keep using.

Thanks, Brink ,for the quick response. I have seen many sites, however, that indicate öne can "Go to your Settings for your computer, and choose CHOOSE DEFAULT APPS BY FILE TYPE, scroll down to .zip and select Windows Explorer, then you're all set." ".zip" is a common extension that one can usually use associate to an app via settings and I think it is exceptional that ".zip" is not in my list, when I see screenshots at other sites showing it typically is listed. ??

Not sure why the suggested that there either since .zip is not listed by default. The easiest way is to use the "Open with" context menu to change the association for .zip.

Not to pester you, but it is inconvenient to "open with" every single time, and I remain quite perplexed why every other possible file extension appears to be listed in "Settings/System/Default apps/CHOOSE DEFAULT APPS BY FILE TYPE" but not .zip. It has always been possible prior to Windows 10 to associate ANY file extension with a default program. I'm not sure what you mean by ".zip is not listed by default." How else would one permanently associate a program with a file extension? The link I gave you, provided again below, as well as others I could find - indicates that that other people have .zip listed in their file type listings. Have you checked your listings available at location I've specified above? I have ... .yps, .z, .z96... and no .zip. Do you not see a .zip extension either but see essentially all others? It's no bother at all. *Smile

What I mean is that Windows 10 does not have .zip listed in OPTION FOUR and OPTION SEVEN below to be able to select a default app for.

You'll need to use another option to set a default app for .zip files instead.

Hello @bongo2202, and welcome to Ten Forums. *Smile

There's not a default association for APK files by default in Windows. If you like, the .reg file below will unassociate APK files for you.
