Restore from File History keeps stopping

I am trying to restore my data from a previous Dell XPS 13 9380 to a new Dell XPS 13 9380 computer using W10 build 17763.529 from an apple time capsule disk drive that I have been using for multiple apple and windows machines with no problem for years. The restore of 198GB runs fine for a while, and then repeatedly presents a dialog window saying that "(backup drive) is not available. Make sure the location is available, and try again." with a retry or cancel button. Clicking retry will have it continue to calculate the backup files remaining, after which it fails again. I have completed about 50GB of backup, so it never gets to the point where it continues backing up the remaining files. File explorer and all other apps on the machine have no issue accessing the backup drive, nor does my macbook pro.

The XPS 13 and the time capsule are connected via Gb Ethernet cables through a Linksys EA7500 wireless router, and I've given these two devices bandwidth priority. When it was running, it never got more than 7-8MB/sec transfer rates, and often were in the 1-2MB/sec range - another puzzling experience.

Any suggestions on how to enable this restore to complete would be sincerely appreciated!

    Thanks and regards,

    Howard

  2. File History never copies anything

    Hi,

Temporary system failure is one of the possible reasons why this issue is happening. To help resolve the issue, we suggest deleting the files in the USB drive. Follow the steps below:

    • Open Settings > Update & Security > Backup > More Options.
    • Click Stop using this drive.
    • Delete the File History folder on your external drive.
    • Try again to add the USB drive to backup File History.
Keep us in the loop with the result.

  3. How to stop File History on the old drive and start File History on a new drive?

    I use the external drive
for File History and have a lot of information there. I want to restart the File History process on a new drive and place the previous File History drive off-site.

Please suggest the steps to stop File History on the old drive and start File History on a new drive.

    File History Restore Not Working

My apologies for my not explaining my problem clearly.

File History would always list my external drive. It would not list the File History backup subfolder, "Computer Name", which contained my backup.

I completed the 5 steps you recommended, and in step (4), using Windows Explorer, I opted to change the name to "File History.old" instead of deleting it. Had I deleted it, all my backup files that I want to reload onto drive C would have been gone.

When I look at the external backup drive in Windows Explorer it now shows 4 folders, $RECYCLE.BIN, FileHistory, FileHistory.old and System Volume Information. Bottom line, FileHistory contains only the backed up data currently on Drive C as a result of step
5, while FileHistory.old contains the data I wish to reload.

Now when I go to Control Panel/File History/Select drive, and select the external backup drive, only the subfolder contained in FileHistory shows up. The subfolder contained in FileHistory.old, which contains the data I wish to restore, is still not listed.
When I select "Restore personal files" it only shows folders associated with FileHistory.

Thanks for your attention and help, but I am now resigned to copying and pasting the files that I need to restore. I totally yield to the higher power that is Microsoft.

    Again thanks,

    RP
