    Restoring Files From An External Hard Drive


    So I had to send in my previous laptop for repair and backed up my critical files and programs prior to sending it off. Glad I did so, since the folks doing the repairs, totally borked it. I got my warranty refund and purchased a new laptop.


    Problems have arisen though, in that the backup which I made using the Windows 10 Backup tool has renamed all my files by adding on the date and time of the backup. This has COMPLETELY screwed up more than a few very critical programs, which will not run with everything being renamed.


    I need to know if there is a means of restoring the files and programs through a wizard of some sort, so I don't have to manually rename 6000+ files.

    I am looking for a free (freeware) program that will back up and restore a hard drive. I'm looking to clone a few external hard drives. If the program will backup the used space instead of the whole drive this will be awesome! Thanks for any suggestions.

    Hi John,

    We suggest that you try the troubleshooting steps below:

    • Open your External Hard Drive file in File Explorer.
    • Type the name of the file you want to search on the search box and click Enter.
    The file will show up in Search Results and you will be able to move it to the correct folder.
