  1. Right Click on Desktop Context Menu take a long time to show up

    Hello everyone,

I have a strange problem where my PC would idle and take a long time for the Contextual Menu to show up when I Right Click on a blank space on the Desktop. It literally take about 10 - 15 seconds for the Menu to show up.

After that it is fast again. Then after awhile it does it again. I don't know what the problem is. I try to do a Clean install of Windows 10 Pro. Wipe everything clean and install it on a 256GB Samsung Pro SSD, and it still does it. There is barely anything on the Contextual Menu so I don't know what the problem is.

    Here is my PC Spec.

    Intel i7 3.2Ghz
    12GB DDR3 12GB RAM
    Nvidia 770 GTX
    Corsair Liquid Cool
    Corsair 850 HX Power Supply
    256GB SSD Drive
3TB Hitachi Touro External Drive USB 3.0

Currently I only have a few essential programs install on my PC so don't think it is causing it.

    1.) Adobe Master Collection CS6
    2.) Microsoft Office 2013
    3.) Google Chrome
    4.) BitTorrent Por
    5.) Skype Desktop
    6.) Samsung Magician Software
    7.) ShellFolder Fix x64

Major issues with Explorer, taskbar, start menu, and Task Manager

Recently, my PC seems to start up slowly. Today I saw there were some system events about NTFS corruption, so I did a disk scan with automatic repair. After computer rebooted, I'm suddenly having a lot more problems. I'll describe the symptoms I've noticed
so far. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

    ================================

    * The start menu doesn't show, neither pressing Windows key nor left-clicking works. Right-clicking on the start icon, the context menu still shows without delay.

    * Windows Search/Cortana stopped working. I can still show/hide the search box on the taskbar. If it's shown, it doesn't respond to mouse clicks. If it's hidden or just an icon, I can't launch it by any means.

    * On taskbar, there's a blank space where the Microsoft Edge icon used to be, but if I mouse over that blank space, the "Microsoft Edge" tooltips text still show up, and if I click it, Edge still launches, after a long delay. All other taskbar icons are still
    there.

    * When I right-click on Edge blank space, the context menu takes a long time to pop up. Context menu for other taskbar icons pop up without delay.

    * For some types of items/files, the right-click context menu takes a long time to show (about 10 seconds), during the delay the busy icon spins and explorer or desktop becomes unresponsive.

Slow context menu types include: shortcuts, directories, This PC, Network, EXE, PNG, JPG, HTM

Fast context menu types include: TXT, PDF, CFG, XML (surprise since HTM is slow), random file types

    * When starting Task Manager, it stays busy and "not responding" for a long time before showing anything. When switching to Details tab for the first time, it takes a long time before the process list is populated, but during this delay Task Manager is still
    responsive.

  3. Windows Right Click Not loading & Displaying Context menu in File Explorer

I am using latest Windows10 I received with Lenovo Yoga 3. When I right click the folder Context menu is not dropping down & moreover windows keeps on showing the review symbol again & again. The drop down context menu just takes a very long time to load.

Right Click on Desktop Context Menu take a long time to show up

    Hey Darkvelvet,
I had the exact same issue as you did. Fortunately, I was able to fix it, and here's how I did it.

Hold down the Windows Key and R. This will open up the "run" dialogue box.
    It looks like this:
Right Click on Desktop Context Menu take a long time to show up [IMG]

Type the following in the box: regedit
Click "Ok" or press the "Enter" key.
This will open the registry editor.

Once open, navigate through the folders using this path:
    HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\background\shellex\ContextMenuHandlers
Once there, make sure you click on the drop-down arrow. You'll see a few folders.
It should look something like this:
Right Click on Desktop Context Menu take a long time to show up [IMG]

You should find a folder with the name of the graphics driver, in your case, NVidia.

BEFORE YOU DO ANYTHING ELSE YOU MUST BACKUP YOUR REGISTRY JUST IN CASE
    Click File\Export
Name the file anything and save it anywhere you'll remember.
If anything goes wrong, you can double-click this file and it will restore the registry to its previous state.

Now lets get back to the NVidia folder.
    Delete it.
To make the full change it may require a PC restart.
    I hope this helps! *Smile

  5. Hello Tey, I try your method Deleted the Nvidia Menu from Regedit and restarted my pc and it still doesn't work. Contextual Menu is still taking a very long time to show up.

I'm starting to think it could be my 3TB External Toshiba Touro Drive. I check Energy Saving Mode to not have it go to sleep, but from time to time when I try to access the Drive it take a while to open it and access it. Very strange and I don't know how to fixed it. I also have a few none SSD Internal Hard drive in my Computer as well. I will try unplug the drive and see if it the External Drive that is causing the problem.

Step 5 in that post will not work in Windows 10 so here's an update.
Please download: ShellExView - Shell Extension Manager For Windows

    • This program does not require installation, just right click and run as Administrator
    • From the menu, click on Options then click on Filter by Extension Type and select Context Menu Also put a check marks on the items as shown below.

Right Click on Desktop Context Menu take a long time to show up [IMG]

    • On the list are the Shell Extensions with pink background, installed by the third party programs
    • Hold down SHIFT Key, click on first item & then on last item to select ALL then click on the red button on top left corner to disable all.
    • CTRL+ALT+DELETE->Task Manager->File->Run New Task and type explorer->OK
    • Now try to right click on desktop to see if it fixes your problem. If it does then start to enable one by one and repeat step 5 until the problem occurs again, that's the offending extension.

That doesn't seam to work either, I don't think it's my Contextual Menu is having the problem because when load the program, there only a few in there and when I disabled it, still get the same result.

I did however unplug my Hitachi 3TB Toura External Hard Drive and it doesn't seam to do it anymore. However, this hard drive it seam to idle and go into Hibernation or sleep mode when it is inactive for a long time. I was wandering if anyone have a Solution to Disabled the Hibernation on External Hard Drive? Or make it not idle and go to sleep?

I notice everytime I right click on the Desktop for the Contextual Menu the External Hard Drive Light Blink a couple of time meaning it access it everytime the menu come up. So looking for a Solution to not have the Menu access the Hard Drive or make the Hard Drive always active, not go into Hibernation would be great.

    Thanks!

Have you tried disabling the USB power-save feature?

This have been bothering me for year already with no solution. I thought installing Windows 10 Pro would fixed it, but sadly it does not. It always cause my PC occasionally freeze and the Hard Drive take awhile for it to open. It have gone so bad that beside the Contextual Menu is slow, but opening and Empty the Recycle Bin also slow as well.

I try a Freeware Program call "No Sleep HD" NoSleepHD - Home

This program will writes an empty text file every few minutes to your external hard drive to keep it from going into auto-sleep mode. Will report back if it's working. However, even if it work, I rather not use this method since I don't want to have this program always open at Startup and running in my Taskbar all the time, and always writing files to the Hard Drive shorten the life of the Hard Drive.

The sleep function is in the firmware for the external drive. There is no simple way to disable it other than using a program like "NoSleepHD". I would not want an application like that running all the time, though.

Do you NEED the external drive plugged in all the time? If so, maybe you should open the drive case and install it in the PC. I've done that a couple times. Keep the external case, though, so you can make it a "portable" drive again if the need arises.

If the drive is used for automatic continuous backups, you'd probably be best served by a network-connected drive.

    My 2 cents.

  12. Using NoSleepHD seam to be working, but like you said, I really don't want to used this method since it's bad for the hard drive and may even shorten the life of it. Not to mention it may overheat it also.

I really don't want to tear the Hard Drive apart since this is the only External Drive I have. It have to be on most of the time because I'm using it as a Network Drive using Windows Sharing plug in my PC since it isn't a Cloud Network Drive. If there is no Solution, does anyone know if replacing it with an External Cloud Hard Drive will work? Does it go to sleep as well?

If you still have the NDIVIA control panel in the context menu. Open it and click on Desktop and uncheck 2 items from there. You don't need it in Context Menu. You can also access it from Control Panel->NVDIA Control Panel.

In Addition, run chkdsk on the external HD to make sure it is not corrupted. Use: Chkdsk /r option.

  14. I actually delete the Nvidia Control Panel in the Contextual Menu using the RegEdit. Then also try that ShexView program and Disabled all the Contextual Menu. Chkdsk /r option Return nothing wrong with the Hard Drive itself.

Guess I have to keep using the NoSleepHD in the meantime.

I'm not sure about the all-in-one drives like WD My Cloud, but my NAS setup is a box that I supplied the drives for. In my case, WD Red NAS drives. I have five different drives mapped to the NAS, and the right-click context menu pops up quickly.

I just ran a quick test using a Toshiba USB3 HDD, and I noticed no slow down in the context menu. I think the problem may lie somewhere other than the USB drive. Real frustrating, though, since your system is pretty clean. I'll keep digging and let you know if I find anything.
