  1. Route.exe error on shutdown.

When I shutdown I frequently see an error flash quickly on the shutdown screen telling me (I think) that route.exe cannot start. What causes this and how can I fix it?

  2. BulldogXX Win User

    \Windows\sysWOW64\Route.exe

Route.exe is a Windows system file that displays and modifies the entries in the local IP routing table.

    \Windows\sysWOW64\Route.exe

I'll let you make that decision.

If you're so well informed that you have to ask in a community forum ... you don't even have the ability to do research on the internet ... are you sure that you want to second-guess Microsoft's engineers?

  4. Route.exe error on shutdown.

    Hi rafikiphoto

If you search on Google you will see lots of hits related to this exe at shutdown.

Some suggest it was cause by Registry Cleaners or software that was installed or uninstall incorrectly. (Not saying you did it just it didn'y happen right).

So when did this start? Had you installed something or un-installed something? Do you use a registry cleaner?

Restore points may be an option here, if yours are enabled and you know when it started.

You could also perform a process of elimination to identify? Brink wrote a tutorial on the process which I would recommend.

  5. Thanks Ken. Yes, I had done searches here and elsewhere and found references but nothing definitive.

It has been happening for a while and has been more of an annoyance than something that is having an effect on the sysytem and just today I thought I would try to do something about it. That being the case using restore points is unlikely to be effective.

I do use a registry cleaner from time to time. It has always been the same one and there hasn't been a recent update that could have changed things.

Thanks for the clean boot link, I'll se if that can help.

  6. You will notice in lots of forums that people recommend not using registry cleaners. You may be looking at cause, still need to find answer.

One process that might also help is the inplace repair / upgrade. This moves you to V1709, FYI. While a non destructive process I always recommend a full data backup. No guarantee it solves just another possibile fix.

  7. Skip the registry cleaner.
Cleaning is for dirty carpets, and dirty clothing.
    Registries do not need cleaning.

Ask yourself how many of the billion Windows users have a registry cleaner. (Approx. 0%, rounded to three decimals.)
Ask yourself why those billion non-users of registry cleaners don't have problems.
Then ask yourself why you'd need one.

  8. Route.exe error on shutdown.

Thanks both. I've used a RC for more than 20 years but I will cease that now. The repair sounds a way forward Ken, thanks for the link.

  9. I have done an 'in place upgrade'. It has not only fixed that problem but solved a couple of other oddities that I had noticed recently. Quite painless and everything that should be still seems to be in place.

Thanks Ken and also my thanks to the team who put together the tutorial. I don't know what I would do without you all!
