The rumors always seem to threat a cloud os, but they (and all others for that matter) must know that it would be suicide in this day and age of metering and capping ISP's. There is no way I would touch it....i'd give up completely if all I could do was have a cloud OS.
It's worrying enough just making sure I don't get near the monthly cap, I couldn't imagine having to do the majority of everything else that way too.

I never thought about it like that before, but yeah, with the cost of my wireless internet service a cloud based OS would cost me a fortune and I would be forced to give it up.

Same here, and I strongly dislike the concept anyway. I nearly gave 8.1 a miss because I feared too much net-centricity, fortunately I was able to bypass/disable it all.

It is the thing that would drive me from MS and onto Linux exclusively.

    Welcome to Nine Forums Wenda!

If I didn't have some programs designed exclusively for Windows that I use all the time, Linux would be my OS of choice.

  5. Good day folks, I have a few thoughts.
    1. For Microsoft to do as Apple when it comes to PC's doesn't make sense to me.
(making PC work and look like portables)
Why follow a company that has at most 3% of the PC market when Microsoft has 90% plus of the PC market. Microsoft like most very large companies do make mistakes but they don't jump ship. Microsoft got the very large share of the PC market doing most things the right way. Look back on those things and build on them. Microsoft has done enough good things (Windows 7) and enough mistakes (Windows 8) to know what works for the PC world.
    2. Believing that PC computing is going to die because of tablets and the like is very short sited.
Both markets will survive and grow. Treating both markets the same is not wise to me. Some how at times Microsoft forgets that many users if not most have both portable and PC's. It's not a computing world that you can only pick one and leave the other methods of computing behind. People/companies want the ability to pick and match their computing needs and methods. They don't want just one method, take it or leave it.
    3. Wanting to dance with a new girl at the party isn't bad but don't forget the girl that brought you to the party.
    4. Computer cloud computing isn't consumer driven but company (Apple, Google, Microsoft) driven.
No where have I seen that the consumer in the most part want or desire cloud computing. It will meet the needs of some but not most.
I understand that their has been cloud computing for decades.
Email, texting, phone call are all stored on a server somewhere which is a type of cloud. Which are needed for normal communications. One must be careful how they use these services.
I think we all know that these services have been hacked from day one.
To use cloud computing for secure sensitive information, programs, operating systems ect. is company (Apple, Google, Microsoft ect.) driven not consumer driven.
I think that large companies will figure out that secure information, programs, and operating systems is better protected and controlled by their own quality I.T. Department than some stranger in a cloud.

Lets hope the new Windows will improve on the great job that Windows 7 has done. I want Microsoft to do great in the portable market. Just don't muck up my PC needs doing so.

For most programs I have found good alternatives (or even better) in Linux. But I am sure there are some programs in Windows that are hard to replace.

Do you know of a Linux app that would not only replace my Quicken software, but would also let me import all the financial data, which dates back many years? It would be a monumental task for me to re-enter all that data in a new program. I have tried Quicken in WINE and while it works to some degree, it loses some important functionality, like getting updates from my brokerage account.

Sorry, I have no clue. I can track my finances easily - in my wallet, LOL.

  9. Wallets work quite well.
No wires and the only recharging needed is to add funds when needed.

I figured that might be the case, but one never knows if one doesn't ask. If I wasn't involved in buying and selling stocks, I could easily track my finances in my wallet as well. *Biggrin

  11. I don't have a wallet. If I don't have money in my money clip I don't but nothing.

Must be hectic - all that buying and selling stocks. I already lose track of all the hardware gear I buy.

In my case, I'm not a day trader so it isn't that hectic. It's mostly researching and keeping track of investments.

  15. I'm try to think with my 3 brain cells who would want a cloud operating system other than Microsoft.
I don't believe Home or Business users are looking for or wanting such a system.
