    Hi Brink,

Thnks for the link however it is really inconvenient since all options require to use the mouse. This post 10 option describes a way to run any app as admin from anywhere by modifying the registry so it should work from cmd but it does not

again thanks for the link however this still is not satisfying. What I want is to run cmd from everywhere. For example you navigate to a folder using windows explorer and press Alt+D and then cmd to open a console to the current dir. How to elavate that console.

You could make a shortcut C:\Windows\cmd.lnk and set it to run C:\Windows\System32\cmd.exe elevated. It is higher in your path so is invoked by default when you type cmd in explorer.

Edit - sorry, it doesn't always get picked up - depends where explorer is open.

This below will give you a Open Command Window Here as Administrator context menu that will hopefully help.

Brink I am sure you agree with me that many users open a great number of console instances in a working day. Windows 10 seems to sacrifice convenient comparing to the mighty windows 7. I am a developer more than 20 years and I am forced to spend my time to find solutions to such common issues. It looks again that the windows 10 team borrowed bad decisions from windows 8 and they need to reconsider. For me and all my colleagues using mouse is not an option.

Run as Administrator in Windows 10

I have a bat file that i need to be launched at each reboot. However, it works only with admin rights.

So what's the code i should type in it so it automatically gets admin rights? Without it, it won't work on 10!

    Hello unko, *Smile

By default, Windows will not run anything elevated at startup for security reasons.

You might see if you may be able to use the method in the tutorial below instead to do what you're wanting though. It'll show you how to create an elevated task to run the commands you need, create an elevated shortcut of this task, and place the shortcut in your Startup folder to have it run elevated at startup for you.

  10. What happens internally when you click the "Run as Administrator" checkbox in the "Change settings for all users" dialog?

I check the box and the registry key is created. I uncheck the box and the registry key is removed. I add the registry key and the box is checked. I remove the registry key and the box is unchecked.

However... while changing the registry key does change the checkbox, the file's behavior doesn't change.

This means if I create the registry key, the file won't be run as an administrator even though the box is now checked. If I remove the registry key, the file will be run as an administrator even though the box is now unchecked. Checking or unchecking the box manually is the only way to affect the behavior, which means if I want the file to be run as an administrator for example I have to uncheck the box and then check it again, since it's already checked.

Is this some kind of Windows bug? Or is the "real" setting stored somewhere else?

    Hello Kyle, *Smile

This also depends on if the app requests elevation natively by default or not.

Please go ahead and post a screenshot showing your registry settings for this app like in Option Eleven to see if anything may stand out.

  12. By the way, I forgot to say it... great guide!

Here's a screenshot as requested. I don't believe it reveals anything my comment does not.

To provide more information, the faulty behavior applies only to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE. HKEY_CURRENT_USER behaves as expected.

I'm not the only one who has encountered this problem, so please test it for yourself. Change the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE value for some standard exe (I tried Chrome) and then try running that exe.

EDIT: In case you're going to comment on the missing tilde, that makes no difference. The tilde is just used to indicate that a value should append rather than replace. And yes, of course I've tried it both ways.

Run as Administrator in Windows 10

Normally, you wouldn't want to have a web browser "Run as administrator" for security reasons.

It's odd that it would work for you if set via properties, but not via regedit since it's the same settings.

If anything is set in HKLM, it would override HKCU.

Did you already try restarting the computer after setting HKLM to see if that may help?

  14. Yes, restarting does nothing. And never mind the web browser thing. Please try it with any program.

Here's an example of other people noticing that it doesn't work with HKLM specifically: How to access the value of

Hmm, I'm seeing the same thing when manually setting HKLM.

It appears something has changed for HKLM, but I'm not seeing anything else different than what's in the tutorial when monitoring with Process Explorer.

For now, it would be best to set HKLM via properties instead.
