Windows 10: Safely Remove Hardware and Eject Media icon Missing in Windows 10

Yes, the eject icon on the taskbar ejects USB hard drives as well as cards/sticks. It's only in File Explorer that you can't eject a USB HDD. Bit of a problem for the OP as they still haven't got their icon to appear on the taskbar, File Explorer is all they can use.

 

wish I did, would make me more comfortable although I don't use either very much.

Well, it should show up for any USB drive, memory stick or HDD - not just for SD cards. If it doesn't now appear for all of them, something is not working right. Sometimes a restart can fix issues like this (a shutdown may not be enough, not if 'fast shutdown' is in use).

If a restart doesn't fix it, then try creating another account. Does the icon work properly for that one?

As a workaround until we get the icon back, you can get a 'safely remove hardware' dialog box by running (from a command prompt or with WinKey + R) the command: RunDll32.exe shell32.dll,Control_RunDLL hotplug.dll

You could make a shortcut on your desktop to run this, if you wish.

 

I guess I am still a novice when it comes to all this. I do miss my windows 7...

 

Actually, this bit still works the same as it did in 7. Right-click on the desktop, select New > Shortcut. In the 'Type the location of the item' box type the command line. Click next, give it a name, click Finish and you're done.
