Windows 10: Samsung Magician

Discus and support Samsung Magician in Windows 10 Drivers and Hardware to solve the problem; I had RAPID on 4.5 but it causes BSOD's in windows 10, but thanks, I had thought maybe they fixed it...not. Well, that's a very good thing to... Discussion in 'Windows 10 Drivers and Hardware' started by Cliff S, May 15, 2015.

Well, that's a very good thing to know...! That even with the workaround for an 840...it still doesn't work in Win10 (10074 I assume is your build.) I can now end my quest to figure out how to get everything installed from the "RAPID" folder in the Magician directory (programs(x86))--I even created a tiny Win8.1 installation on another bootable drive so that I could see what Samsung was loading when it enabled rapid mode. There's a lot more to it than just the service...irony is that I'm pretty sure I got all of the drivers installed properly in Windows/system32/drivers & driverstore--but I cannot get Samsungrapidsvc.exe to run no matter what I do, even manually putting the program in the startup directory and booting doesn't work as it fails shortly after running--I can also get the "Samsung Rapid mode notification utility" to run at Win10 boot--it stays up--but when I run Magician 4.6 it shows rapid mode is enabled, but it also says "rapid mode is missing a component it needs to run, uninstall and then reinstall rapid mode to fix it." LOL...*Wink Didn't identify the missing component, but my guess is it's the service that I can't get to run in 10074--must be incompatible with either this build or else Win10 entirely. My problem is that I keep forgetting that everything doesn't have a workaround "if only I can find it"...*Wink

So that's as close as I came to getting it to run under Win10 10074...Magician 4.6 says it's "enabled" but lacking something...but it definitely isn't enabled at all...*Wink I'm throwing in the towel on this one....Samsung needs to step up to the plate, here...

I had it running in 9926 when I upgraded from Win7, but magician would crash. I then tried to install version 4.5 after clean install and got BSODs. Version 4.6 installs without crashing, but it's missing RAPID & Optimize. Version 4.6 even has optimize turned off in Win8.1(which is for TRIM and was actually put there for Windows versions without trim support). I just hope that they fix RAPID so it can "see" Windows version# 10.xxx.xxx and stop looking for just 6.xxx.xxx, because RAPID is a real boost. I have compared it to some PCIe SSD stats, and my Samsung 840 Pro blows them away(only with RAPID turned on).

  3. I have a brand new Samsung 850 Evo ( for $89? yes please!) sitting on the desk next to me waiting for Samsung to update the Magician software to recognize rapid mode in Win10 on the drive. Since the 850 Evo is not recognized by the 4.4 version, I cannot sneak up on rapid mode. I have to stick with my 840 Pro until then.
BTW, rapid mode takes a while to tune itself to your most used programs and it works very well after it does. I remember after a few weeks, I booted up and said to myself "dang, that was fast!" and then remembered that I had started up rapid mode a while back. So it is a noticeable improvement.

Rapid mode is not really all that important. You can use your 850 now, and it will perform great, and when the new magician software recognizes Windows 10, you just enable it for that extra boost.

Here's what my stats look like.

In real world performance (daily usage) Rapid Mode has little to no performance gains except for write speeds which don't really matter since on SSD's you're trying to limit as much writes to the drive as possible.

Source: A closer look at RAPID DRAM caching on the Samsung 840 EVO SSD - The Tech Report - Page 1

Unless you have like 16GB+ of memory installed and don't know what to do with the spare memory (RamDisk), I'd say enable Rapid Mode with 4GB cache since the newer version of Magician 4.6 allows for up to 4GB.

Otherwise wait for an upgrade to next gen SATA express to to see real performance gains and not through some fancy caching via software only good for benchmarks.

    Edit:

I'm really surprised Windows 10 doesn't have native SSD caching which would greatly speed up Windows for users who are on tight budget and want the best of both worlds (SSD's boot time/load time and storage space).

Nemix thanks for the report link.

EDIT: And thanks for posting in this thread, because, it reminded me I'll need to turn RAPID off anyhow, because Windows 10 will crash and burn if I leave it on, when it installs.*Thumbs

Windows has had, for a very long time, something called SuperFetch, which isn't specifically for SSD's, but speeds up all kinds of disks. In fact, Samsung says Rapid mode is similar to SuperFetch, but provides a more "finely tuned" result and allows for greater ram utilization.

Superfetch is nothing like SSD caching, Superfetch only caches most frequently used programs after a fresh start of Windows and is very limited is it's caching scheme even with 16GB of memory installed it doesn't seem to cache over 8GB.

Whereas SSD caching saves cache into the SSD and does not need to to re-cache the files after every reboot of Windows plus with better SSD caching software you can customize the cache size depending of big your SSD cache drive is and which programs and games to be cached, also SSD caching improves reads and writes speeds for transferring of files which Superfetch cannot do.

Don't confuse Superfetch with SSD cache or Hybrid SSHD hard drives (which are limited to small SSD for caching), in the future when mechanical drives are obsolete and SSD's are really cheap this won't be a problem but currently even until the next Windows after Windows 10 gets publicly released mechanical drives will still play a big role for a cheaper solution to huge storage space in PC's only downfall is it's slow; this is the situation is which SSD caching shines the best.

It's incorrect to say they are nothing alike. They are quite a bit alike, but SSD caching like that provided by Magician goes further than the built-in tools. (Which I said in my first post about this). Yes, Rapid Mode caches data as well as applications, while SuperFetch only caches applications. That doesn't make them "nothing alike".

SuperFetch provides the read-ahead memory caching and ReadyBoost provides the SSD storage for SuperFetch. Of course, as is usually the case, the Microsoft provided tools only go so far, and third party tools are often more configurable and provide more features.

It's more accurate to say these tools go further than the built-in ones.

On my system, it won't let me use ReadyBoost, since it says my system is already so fast it wouldn't be of any benefit.

The point is simply that Microsoft *does* provide these tools, they just aren't as good as you would like them to be.

Are we even talking about the same thing?

I'm not referrring to Samsung's SSD Rapid Mode caching, I'm referring to SSD + mechanical hard drive caching basically like Intel Smart Response Technology only a lot for intelligent and efficient if Windows 10 had implemented the feature natively.

Yes I agree SSD caching takes a lot of ques from Superfetch but what really differentiates it from Superfetch is the fact ram is fast memory which looses all data upon reboot whereas SSD as cache is long memory which can hold the cache data even after reboots.

Learned something today. I recently moved my W8.1 to a Samsung 850 Pro and turned on Rapid mode. I am getting ready to install W10 as a dual boot so you just saved me a big mess. I will turn it off and then install W10.

    Thanks,
    Jim *Cool

I am quite happy with the EVO 840 in a 2xRAID0 as a boot/os/workplace array.

This is with the bugfixing firmware installed and I must say Samsung hit the nail...

But I wonder if random 4k reads of the 850 are better. @Mystere: Do you have a RAID setup of these?
