*Ditto and garbage collection controlled by the firmware goes on in the background while the SSD is Idle, this is why we used to have to over-provision to make space for this. nowadays the extra space is built in so we don't require over provisioning any longer.

Actually, that is not entirely true - it does a partial defrag now and then to keep the NTFS file system in good shape.

AHCI mode looks enabled on Bios, but disabled on Samsung Magician. Also read and write values looks correct. What gives? Is it a bug on Samsung Magician?

Hi Ban, are you running a Samsung SSD & Samsung Magician 4.4, with RAPID mode turned on.

If so Updating the Samsung Magician software should get rid of the BSOD's according to the Samsung forum . . .

 

Oh! Has not done this for me even when doing the defrag manually.

 

I think it just does it but never tells you. As I understand it, it does not defrag in the classic sense of moving data around, but cleans up the NTFS file system that gets fragmented over time.

There is the legendary Hanselman post that way overhyped this, and reality is mere mortals probably never get anywhere near the limit of NTFS file fragmentation to require NTFS defragmentation, but it seems Windows does it anyway. I am guessing MS do this to ensure a problem never arises (and to avoid any criticism?).

 

I just tested Defrag for SSD on 2 devices. Either the possible other processes we talked about are so fast that I could not see what else was going on or it only did a single TRIM command. Exactly as it should be. *Smile

I did it too. It did a bit of scanning then a TRIM command flashed up.

 

The point is that it does an ssd ntfs file system defrag frequently enough that you can never detect it ever being done.

Yes, it seems it's only good for keeping firmware up to date (which is good though).


HAHAH! On my 750GB spinner, my MFT is 15.58GB and contains 16341503 records. It only contains 31415 files. THAT is a lot of records and space used. I guess it's because it's a compressed drive. *Smile

 

I just remove Magician . Now I will not have to fool with it every time there is a CU. I always have had to remove it or the update would fail.

 

Something I just found out about, because Josey was taking about Magician.

Samsung NVMe drivers didn't carry over.
I opened my Magician(I have it set not to load at boot), and it showed that Windows is using the standard NVMe driver for both of my M.2's*Banghead:




Device manager shows the same:
