Windows 10: Samsung SSD Firmware Warning - 960 Series

I am seeing reports on the Samsung Forums that the new 4Bxxxxx Firmware is not working
for everyone with the 960 Pro or only works for a few days and then the problems come back ,
so proceed with cautionand perhaps do some research yourself 1st.

Don't Update if you Don't have an Issue is the best Idea currently if you have the 2BXXXX FW stay with it.

Thanks for this update Kbird, I have never updated the bios for my 960 Pro, still on older one 2xxx *Smile No intentions of upgrading at this time either.

 

I updated my spare 960Pro from 2xxx to the latest version 4xxx. Works just fine with no freezes or anything else. It's the 500GB version not the 1 TB some people are having trouble with. Can't say if this newer firmware has improved the performance or not as I don't bother to bench mark any of my drives. Tried the drive in both of my machines and works fine.

I have 960 EVO on firmware 2xxxx.

Is it okay / recommended for me to update firmware?

I lost touch with what is okay and what is still dicey.

 

I have same one and not going to flash it unless I'm sure of any gains with new BIOS.

 

I agree with Mike, I have the Pro on 2xxxx and have no intentions of updating my firmware either. *Smile Choice is of course the user.

 

There is no benefit at this point so I would not risk it .....some users with the Pro are still having issues with their Drives on 4xxxx. but on a whole it seems better.

My Speed issues were because I set the Source Tuner Clock in the Bios manually to the specified Speed instead of leaving it on Auto , Magician 5.2 says it is faster now than i ever saw it but I am not 100% convinced it is right since AS SSD Bench doesn't agree with the Speed in 5.2

5.2 won't even tell me what Bios my EVO needs upgrading too , just says I need an update , so I won't be doing it while there are questions on the 3.xxx and 4.xxx bios's as all is well currently.

Can you explain some more about "Source Tuner Clock in the Bios" ?

 

I Really don't know any of the Technical Ins and Outs , I happened to mention my Issue on the OCN Asus X99 Forum and one of the Guys mentioned while having issues with his Win7/Win10 Dualboot and playing with settings, he noticed his PCIe Gen speed drop too, if the Source Tuner was set to anything other than Auto. The Bios recommends 60db for 100mhz FSB , so that was what I had been setting , so I set Auto and weeks of playing with other settings and different Bios's was ended *Smile

Oh, that looks like BCLK multiplier/devider, we don't have that on Ryzen platform.

 

You only see it if you switch out of Auto on the Ai Overclock Tuner Method eg to Manual or XMP etc , I don't play with the BCLK on X99 , too many weird issues like this and memory holes eg at 3000 mhz, so for the 1st year I ran at 125 FSB as it was the only speed my 3000mhz Ram would work ( other than 2133) , till someone on OCN gave me settings that worked at 3200mhz on the 100 FSB. The 5820K overclocks nicely using the Multiplier anyway so no need to go into all that hassle.

 

If you have no issues with your 960 EVO Ken, I don't see why you keep wanting to update the firmware. ?? Does not increase the speed, or much of anything else. If you were having some kind of issues then It would make sense.

 

Only reason I was looking was to avoid a future problem.

The majority of the people, 86% five stars, like it and have no issues with the EVO, just like myself. That reminds me, I have to leave a feedback for my purchase....
