Personally, I would never buy a hard drive (or SSD) more than 1TB in size. I would rather get 4x1TBs. Recovering files from corrupted 1TB will take you up to a day. Think about scanning a 4TB drive. It will take you a week to recover and sort out your files. With one 4TB, if something goes wrong, you are done. With 4x1TB, what are the odds of having 4 of them go kaput all at the same time? Unless your house was caught on fire. *Smile But this is me.

I have 10 HDDs & 2 SSDs altogether excluding the ones in my PCs. Some of them I use for testing OSes.

On a scale of 1 to 10, I would rate Qnap a 20. It's so amazing. I was actually choosing between this Qnap and Synology but I'm glad I got this Qnap.
Setup is a breeze. And although this is just an entry level model (TS-220), there are tons of useful features on it plus the expand-ability is great, too. It has 2 USB 3.0 ports and 2 eSATA ports where you can connect additional external drives and access them anytime, anywhere in the world. It has a "Linux-like" web interface with very useful apps. It also has apps for iOS and Android where you can download, upload or save files to and from the NAS even when you are outside your home network.

The QSync feature is a good one too. It syncs your files across all your PCs so that you have all your important files available to all your PCs and gets updated automatically when you edit a file from any PC. I have the 2 main hard drives on RAID 1 mode for all my important data. The external drives contains all my movies, photos, music, etc,. Transfer speed within my network is between 40Mbps and 90Mbps depending on the type of hard drive.

Yeah I thought so, too. I only wanted a faster NAS than my previous setup but I got 10x more of what I wanted for a NAS.

Can't understand that logic in any shape or form --with decent Engineering a modern non moving solid state device always has to be better than a mechanical one -- for all sorts of reasons.

Do you still take a huge alarm clock in your pocket or a decent modern wristwatch or would you trust a hand calculator rather than use a modern small electronic one or even an app on your mobile phone --- come to think of it - would you still stick with a Land line phone only with a mechanical rotary dial or a modern smartphone -- or use an old CRT monitor instead of nice energy efficient LCD ones.

The days of SSD's having limited numbers of Read Write cycles are long gone - a decent SSD will probably outlast any spinner however you use it on your PC.

I don't think I ever remember any piece of equipment where a warning posted in the early days (ist Gen) about limited use has lasted so long as with SSD's (now 4th Gen). Those early warnings can be 100% totally ignored now.

Of course a 4TB SSD will still be a bit (just a bit !!!!) expensive ( C'mon Horse nr XXX at the next races !!!) but they will get cheaper with time.

@MilesAhead -- If I knew the future too I wouldn't even bother with Wall St -- just choose the next set of Horse races and use a Betting Exchange like Betfair -- no Tax (you are investing on a "Market" !!! hence in my area no tax !!) and money paid straight away -- no need even to set up an account with Margin !!!

I totally agree with you Jimbo.
SSDs are the way to go. But those 4TB SSDs will probably never gonna be a big hit for "regular" PC users except probably for people involved on heavy graphics or video editing jobs whose machines are top of the line.

 

You can now get a 4TB wd caviar "black" for about $250 cdn. That's not bad for a "black", which carries a 5yr warranty. Figure next year about this time they'll be down around $150.

 

SSD's are definitely the way to go. When my order from Newegg comes in I'll be upgraded my new computer from a 2 TB HDD to a 240Gb SSD main drive. I'll keep the old drive the way it is until the warranty runs out. I already installed a 1TB HHD for storage. My old computer had a 240GB SSD and I was very pleased with the performance.
