Windows 10: Scaling 1920x1080 to 4K screen

Hello everyone!

I have a question that I have not been able to find a proper answer to, and I'm starting to think it's impossible to do.

I recently bought a Dell XPS 15 with a 4K screen. I normally don't care for 4K but I thought it would be useful to futureproof my investment as much as possible, and I believe the 4K screen to be far brighter and more color accurate according to all the research I did prior.

Now to the issue: Windows 10 scaling is a bit wonky and I don't really care for the added pixel density at this present time. I tried to set the computer to 1920x1080 on the display settings and it works fine, but it looks blurry. It appears to scale the pixels in a "soft" way. I'm looking for a way to scale the pixels in a "hard" way, jagged edges and all. Is it possible?

Photoshop users might understand better if I describe it as follows: I want "nearest neighbor" scaling, not "bicubic" or "bilinear".

Any idea how I can do this?

4K screen (250% scale): Texts within metro apps are too small

I have recently updated my Windows 8.1 to Windows 10 on my Lenovo Y50-70 with a 4K screen. The screen is currently scaled to 250%. Everything works fine except the metro apps. There I have very tiny text for most of the apps I frequently use (Wunderlist,
Facebook, etc.). Apps written by Microsoft do not seem to suffer from this problem. If I switch the Full HD resolution (1920x1080), then the texts look fine again.

On Windows 8.1 all the apps worked very well with 4K resolution (250% scale). Does anyone experience the same problem and know how to fix it?

Change display resolution and scaling based on program - 4K UHD monitor troubles

Scaling has been a problem since 4K displays were released.

Lots of older programs have tons of problems with scaling. I have been using a work around but it is a major pain. I am hoping this issue is being worked on.

My current solution in windows 10 is to change the scaling to manual for all windows down to 100% and then change the resolution to 1920x1080. It looks barely blurry but at least it's usable. Is this possible to change together and without having to sign
in and out all the time?

Could a batch file be used to change these settings?

No, I'm on an XPS 15. There's no external monitor.

 

Feed the screen some lower resolution and it will have to scale up. That in a Laptop will be a fixed method, apart from maybe doing some tuning with ClearType for text/fonts, or the Windows 10 scaling.
Even with an external monitor that is pretty much fixed by it's design.

I know very well what you mean, some imaging applications do the same sort of thing, with choices, but it is fixed in the design of a Laptop Screen. Maybe high end external monitors have options there ? no idea, I don't have one.

 

I understand that it is fixed by design, but it seems like just an oversight on their part. As far as I can assess, there is no reason this can't be a thing. I've seen enough threads of people requesting this and it makes perfect sense to have an option for it. I'm not sure but I have a feeling it would even be (marginally) less strain on the graphics card to do a perfect 2x scaling without interpolation than with.
