    Scan drive for errors

I put the DVD in the DVD player and clicked Setup.exe while on Windows 10 Desktop as Brink said to do. I read the complete instructions and followed them word for word from Repair Install Windows 10 with an In-place Upgrade

No more, I am tired of getting beat on.

Bringing this uptodate, I was able to do the following without losing anything:
I was running ver 1703 and it kept trying to install updates for 1709 which failed; so I took a shot at installing 1709 and got a big surprise from M$. I ran the ISO and it gave me options for installing "Student" and "Pro" while I was running "Home" so me being greedy as I am, I selected "Pro" and did the upgrade/install and it never asked for a key. Lo and behold this morning I got a watermark saying it was not activated with the same being presented in "Settings".

So here I sit with only one option of paying $99 for an upgrade because, as far as I know, there is no way to revert back to 1703 which was upgraded from Windows 7.

If you have upgraded to 1709, you have 10 days to 'go back to the previous build' (1703).
If unsure, there's a tutorial (you can search for it).

Note: once you have installed & activated Win 10, you can download it and clean install as many times as you wish; activation should be automatic.

You can do a clean install of Windows 10 Home.

There is also a way to downgrade Windows 10 Pro to Home by changing a couple of registry keys and then doing an in-place repair install of Windows.

  6. If you wish to nevertheless manually run a scan, you can do so. Earlier you had to schedule Disk Error Checking for the system drive and for drives which had files or processes or folders opened. In Windows 8, error checking starts right away, even on the system drive – and it longer needs to be scheduled at start-up. Only if some errors are found, will you have to restart to let Windows 8 fix the errors.
To begin the scan,right-click on the Drive which you wish to check and select Properties. Next, click on Tools tab and under Error-checking, click on the Check button. This option will check the drive for file system errors.

If the system detects that there are errors, you will be asked to check the disk. If no errors are found, you will see a message – You don’t need to scan this drive. You can, nevertheless, choose to check the drive. Click on Scan drive to do so.
The scanning starts. I found that the process ran quite fast and the scanning was over in less than 5 minutes.

On completion, Windows will display a message. If no errors are found it will say so.
If errors are found, you will see the following message:
Restart your computer to repair the file system. You can restart right away or schedule the error fixing on next restart.

When I clicked on Show Details, the Event Viewer sprang to life, showing me the relevant log.

To run Check Disk on your System Drive (C), using the command line, type the following and hit Enter:

    chkdsk /f c:
    If required, restart your computer.

I have only gotten the notification once in 2 weeks and have yet to have a single problem. Chkdsk and sfc have been run and no errors found. It is a bug in Windows 10 somewhere, not with my hard drive. Currently, I have upgraded from 1703 to 1709.
