Windows 10: Scanning and repairing drive (C:) ...

Searched forums about this screen. Long story short, I ran into issues with my laptop (Dells XPS 9530) and reinstalled Windows, keeping all my files. That got my computer up and running again after hours of being unsuccessful. I reinstalled a bunch of programs and powered down.

The next time that I started up, I got the "Scanning and repairing drive" screen.

In every message I saw online, people noted a percentage on progress. However, my screen does not have a percentage. It just has an elipsis: …

I've allowed this to continue for almost two full days.

What is going on? Should I interrupt this process with a hard reset on the power button?

I have a brand new lap top, windows 10, i cant turn on my computer without it being stuck on scanning and repairing drive c and it just sits at 65%

How do I get past this?

Often it cant fix it in windows boot from install dvd then choose cmd prompt ype chkdsk c: /f see if it compltes then

 

Hard reset the power button. Booted up in safe mode fine and was able to access my desktop. My hard drive capacity was in red when it shouldn't have been.

Ran "chkdsk C: /f" which cycled through and supposedly corrected errors during that process. Ran "chkdsk C: /r" and going on into hour five and been frozen at 23% for the last few hours with the laptop fan running on high much of that time.

 

According to the TechNet documentation, /r does more than /f: it also "locates bad sectors and recovers readable information." If it's taking a while to complete this may mean it's trying to read through bad sectors on your disk. I hope you let it run overnight and see where you're at the next day. Otherwise, you may need to run a disk diagnostic utility (or use the Dell boot-up diagnostics and see what it can find). You specs don't include the disk mfgr, type and size and there are many models of 8350, so please tell us what you've got so we can make more and better recommendations.

Now that i see add'l information and what's posted here, I agree with EdT. You need run diagnostics on your disk drive next
