Windows 10: Scheduled drive optimization is OFF but running anyway

    Scheduled drive optimization is OFF but running anyway


    Under "Optimize Drives" scheduled optimization is turned off (and has been) but "Current status" column shows it is running anyway, e.g., one drive shows '2 days since last run' and another shows '5 days since last run.' I noticed this after my Macrium Reflect image-based backup (which backs up changed blocks only) actually backed up 4tb of data on a drive with 2tb of data that has few if any changes week to week.

    Any idea what is causing this?

    "Defrag" Task in Task Scheduler is Status=Disabled

    "Optimize drives" (defragsvc) in Services is Status=Running, Startup Type=Manual.

    I tried to look in Event Viewer and cannot figure out how to find anything I'm looking for.

    Any advice on what else to look for or how to identify what is apparently changing blocks on my hard drive would be appreciated. Thanks.

    I suggest you to follow the below steps and check if it helps.


    • In search select Defragment and optimize drives

    • Click on change settings

    • In optimization schedule

    • In frequency select the options accordingly.

    NO I do not leave my computer on FULL TIME. I am UP TO 30 OPTIMIZE and then it reads 15 Defragment. Can I run my computer at all while it OPTIMIZES if it ever does. ASKING FOR HELP IN WINDOWS 10 is TERRIBLE. MY COMPUTER ALWAYS TELLS ME IT DID NOT CLOSE
    DOWN CORRECTLY THOUGH I FOLLOW YOUR RECCOMENDATIONS. I SO MISS WINDOWS 7. WINDOWS 10 has been NOTHING BUT A HEAD ACHE !!!!

    This has nothing to do with the original question.
