Windows 10: SD Card Reader can't be detected

Discus and support SD Card Reader can't be detected in Windows 10 Ask Insider to solve the problem; I have an SD Card reader connected to my case, but my computer can't use the device.     SD Card Reader can't be detected


    I have an SD Card reader connected to my case, but my computer can't use the device. It seems to be a device that has the Device Descriptor Failure error, as I can't find another device like it in device manager. Device instance path: USB\VID_0000&PID_0002\5&166CCC16&0&10

    Please help, I just wanna flash an RPi OS!

    Hi,

    There are several reasons why your SD card reader is not working. To assist you better, kindly answer the questions below:

    • Have you made any changes to your computer prior to this issue?
    • What are the other troubleshooting steps have you done so for?
    • Have you tried to use another SD card reader and see if it is getting recognized or detected by your computer?

    Boot from SD card Reader?


    It likely depends on what the BIOS thinks the device is? If it shows up like a USB thumb drive it should work. If it requires drivers to even be detected it won't.
    I know I wish I could boot from the built in SD Card reader in my laptop but the BIOS does not even see it. It's not listed as a boot option even with a bootable SD card in it.

    Bradleyb, in your Device Manager do you have anything listed in Storage Controllers? I get an entry for MMC/SD. I just checked a 1GB SD card and a 4GB SDHC card, both worked in File Explorer to show their contents.

    Side note: A caveat for such cards is that if they are to be used in a camera they need to be formatted in the camera, not in Windows.
