  1. SD card slot 'ejected' when "Safely remove hardware and eject media " selected

This question has been hanging around for at least 5 years, but as far as I can discover, there has never been a successful solution. Having migrated from Windows 7 (where everything worked) - to Windows 10, I now have this problem.

My PC is an up-to-date quad-core CPU desktop computer with 16Gb RAM running Windows 10 with all the available updates added. It has a built-in module with multiple USB inputs installed which includes both USB 2 and USB 3, and card slots for several varieties. Until last week, under Windows 7, everything worked perfectly.

Now I have Windows 10 and.................

    1. If I insert a SD card into its slot I can read the card in Explorer without problems and if I eject it from Explorer it does so and the slot remains active.

    2. If I insert the card into a USB card adapter and plug that into any of the USB slots it all works perfectly and I can both read the card and eject it using Explorer OR 'Safely remove hardware and Eject Media' without causing any problems - this also applies to other USB devices such as USB sticks and external hard drives.

    3. However, if I insert a SD card into the card slot as (1) above but use 'Safely Remove Hardware and Eject Media' to eject it, the notice telling me that it is safe to remove the card comes up BUT the SD slot is then made inactive and cannot be made active again without rebooting the computer.

Prior to carrying out step 3 above, an inspection of the USB Mass Storage Device properties (<Control Panel>, <Device Manager>, <Universal Serial Bus Controllers>) for this device (identified by a prior instance following step 3 when it will be shown with an exclamation mark against it) shows 5 tabs, the last one of which is ‘Power Management’ and there is a tick box to allow the computer to turn off this device to save power. Once the SD slot has been deactivated, after an instance of step (3) looking at the same USB Mass Storage Device properties, the ‘Power Management’ tab is now missing and there is a message on the ‘General’ tab 'Windows cannot use this hardware device because it has been prepared for "safe removal" but it has not been removed from the computer. (Code 47).
To fix this problem, unplug this device from your computer and then plug it in again.

It appears, therefore, that when ‘Safe Removal…..’ is used, Windows is ejecting and removing power/connection to this port, regardless of the ‘Power Management’ setting.

I realise I can work around this using Explorer but this should not be necessary when 'Safely Remove hardware etc.' otherwise works perfectly for everything else.

I have spent a lot of time trying to find a solution to this, but without success. Is there a known solution or is it a ‘feature’ in Win10 that MS have not yet resolved?

    :)

  3. Missing Eject in "Safely Remove Hardware and Eject Media" List

I use to be able to eject my USB drive via "Safely Remove Hardware and Eject Media" with list as below:

    - Open Devices and Printers
    - Eject Data Traveler 111
    - USB Drive (DSD card slot 'ejected' when "Safely remove hardware and eject media " selected :)
    - Eject My Passport Ultra
    - My Passport (ESD card slot 'ejected' when "Safely remove hardware and eject media " selected :)

However recently the "Safely Remove Hardware and Eject Media" list seems corrupted and shows:

    - Open Devices and Printers
    - USB Drive (DSD card slot 'ejected' when "Safely remove hardware and eject media " selected :)

    - My Passport (ESD card slot 'ejected' when "Safely remove hardware and eject media " selected :)

with { - USB Drive (DSD card slot 'ejected' when "Safely remove hardware and eject media " selected :) } and { - My Passport (ESD card slot 'ejected' when "Safely remove hardware and eject media " selected :) } are grayed out.

Currently the only way for me is go to file explorer and right click the removable drive and click Eject.

    Please help!

Missing Eject in "Safely Remove Hardware and Eject Media" List

    Hi Tze Lin Wong,

The configuration to this can be found under settings. To enable this feature follow these steps:

    • Right-click the taskbar and select Taskbar settings.
    • Under Notification Area, choose
Select which icons appear on the taskbar.
    • Scroll to Windows Explorer: Safely Remove Hardware and Eject Media
      and turn it on.

If this doesn't work, I suggest that you check with your USB drive manufacturer for new drivers or other updates.

    All the best.
