Windows 10: Seagate Central - how to take ownership of folders

Seagate Central:
I've had a 4TB Seagate "Central" for a few years and it was cluttered with lots of backups from my old XP setup, which died.
I connected the Central to the new W10 PC (both hard wired on the LAN)
On the Central, - the old "public" area, - and 2 "User areas" called oak and pine, - show as network connections in Explorer

I wanted to start again with new user names so did a "Clear all" which is supposed to delete all data and user settings from the Central.
It didn't..!

I now have a 4TB "Central" with a public area that wont permit any data to be copied to it. It says there's not enough room. Hmmm
Oak and pine require passwords but don't recognise the ones I used.
So basically the Central is unusable.

I've tried a push button hard reset, which is supposed to return the Central to factory default. It doesn't.
The "techies" (ho ho) at Seagate tell me this is a windows problem. and I must "take ownership" of the public area and user area.
They tell me to follow

I've tried, - but here's what happens
R.Clk on folder icon > context menu > properties > security > advanced
The next step is "Change" owner, but "Unable to display current owner" is displayed.
If I ignore the display and go to the next option "Select user or group" dialogue, ... The only location available is the Seagate Central.
My PC doesn't appear and I can't choose myself (as a user) to take ownership.
I am logged on as the administrator.

Has anyone got a clue how to fix this? (because Seagate doesn't) OR is the "Central" - toast?

In addition you may need to open Task Manager as the Administrator, on Processes tab right click GWX to End Process.

Then you can
Take Ownership of the C:/Windows/System 32/GWX folder and Delete it which should remove all traces.

 

error: "You don't have permission to save in this location. Contact the administrator to obtain permission"

It sounds like a Windows Access Rights issue. For some reason your ID no longer has access rights to that folder. Here are some tips on how to "take ownership" of files and folders

I tried to explain in the OP that The snag is that at this dialogue The only "location" available is the Seagate Central. Your "this location" is your PC. If i could see my PC I wouldn't have a problem. If i click on "locations", all I get is the Seagate

 

What do you see in "Advanced" after clicking "Find Now"?

Through the 'Enter the object name to select' textarea, you should be able to select your computer to change ownership to.

I've tried "everyone" but when I work through the process I get



I've tried other options too, but I got the same "do not have permission" message.

 

I'm not too familiair with user accounts, I bet @Brink has a lot more ideas *Smile

When you see the "Read permissions: type message in security properties, it means that you'll need to change the owner to your current account like in step 4 of option 4 below.

I haven't tried this yet. I though I'd give you a bit more info 1st
The "areas" of the Central I'm trying to access appear as network drives
The tutorial says
"The Take Ownership context menu will not be available when you right click or press and hold on any drive, "





My problem seems to be that the only location available to me is the Seagate Central 408A3F itself





I'm afraid that if I change the registry I might compound the problem.

A few weeks back I applied your registry fix to put Google drive in the nav pane. Before i ran your reg file I (thought I'd) make a back up of the register but I don't believe I did it properly.
Can you explain how I could reinstate the registry if the "add take ownership" tweak turns to custard?

You can see that as I cant change location I can only "find now" on the Central. My PC administrator account is not available.

Seagate techie today suggested the "unable to display current owner" is a Windows problem that i need to sort first and sent me an educational You tube video explaining how to become an administrator. But i am already the one and only administrator on the PC.

The snag I keep running into is that no other locations are avilable. I've done what you advise but can't get past the only location being the Seagate




So when I click on advanced I get





Then when I click on "find now" I only get the names that are available on the Seagate.

 

eg I can "change" to Everyone





But when i try to apply the change I get the error message

 

Are you able to connect the drives via USB instead of as a network drive?
