    Seagate expansion not usable as backup drive

    I have a seagate expansion drive I want to use as a backup drive on Windows 10 1803. When I go to settings>update and security>backup and select 'add a drive', windows says no usable drives found. I already have content on this drive. It displays in file explorer. I can use it as storage, however, backup does not deem this drive as usable for this purpose. I have restarted and reinstalled the device through device manager.

    Why doesn't windows recognize my drive as a usable drive?

    :)

    Seagate expansion portable drive not recognised by Windows 10

    Yes, Seagate did a good job of explaining what is happening. See below. It is easy to set up the Seagate Expansion Drive to be a backup.

    Steve

    "Please note, it looks like the drive is seen in Disk Management now. However, the Desktop Expansion drive didn't come with any backup software keyed for the drive since it was marketed as expanded storage
    rather than backup storage. So, you would need to use an alternate software like Windows Backup options.

    Please follow these steps to setup Windows File History:

    * Click the Start button

    * Click Settings > Update & security > Backup > Add a drive

    * Choose an external drive for your backups.

    Please see these links for more info on Windows 10 backup options:

    Seagate expansion portable drive not recognised by Windows 10

    I am facing the same issue. I bought a Seagate expansion portable drive 1T and my Dell inspiron 1545 is running on W10 however, its not detecting the portable.

    I've downloaded seagate's softwares and tools all of which see the drive and shows that the drive is fully functional. Windows see the drive in manager however I can't backup the drive or see whats in it...

    I've been dong research online and saw that Seagate hasn't yet updated the paragon software for Windows since it's default was set for Mac.

    What is Microsoft doing about this?

    Hi,

    Thank you for posting your query in Microsoft Community.

    I would suggest you to give permission to Seagate and check if the issue persists:

    a. Right-click the Seagate for which you want to set permissions, click Properties, and then click the Security tab.

    b. Click Advanced to open the Advanced Security Settings for <Object> dialog box.

    c. Click Owner tab, click Edit. If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type your password or click Continue.

    d. In the new Advanced Security Settings for <Object> box, in the Change owner to: field, select your User name, and Check the Replace owner on sub containers and objects. Click OK, repeat for remaining boxes. (If your User name is not listed click the
    other users or groups button to add your account). Check in on all the boxes and provide them the read write permission.

    If the issue still persist we suggest you to contact Seagate Expansion support, refer the below link:

    Keep us posted if you face any issues on windows in future. We will be glad to help you.
