Windows 10: Search bar not working since failed update

Hello; My laptop was apparently due for an update yesterday. I began the update around 5 pm and let it run. I went off for dinner and forgot about it. Hours later, I expected the thing to be all done and the laptop automatically shut down. Instead, it was reading just 84 percent complete. I waited another half hour or so. Still unchanged at 84 percent. It was quite late. I forced shut the laptop.

Today, it appears some functions are missing in action. One is the search field in the task bar. It's there, but I cannot type anything into it. From the small Windows icon to the left of the bar, I can right click, pop open the tree of options, and then click on 'Search." But nothing happens. In fact, the Desktop Action Center itself no longer shows up.

I've since gone to settings, found an icon with a yellow caution sign next to it, and showing an update was ready. I figured this might complete the aborted update from last night. When it finished, it read "Pending install". Nothing happened. I waited awhile. Nothing happened. I restarted the laptop, hoping it -- whatever it was -- would install. Nothing, as far as I could tell. I went back to settings, and the same icon with the same caution sign was back. But now it said "Download ready", so I clicked on it. Nothing....

Anyway, apologies for the wordiness. Anyone know what is going on?

To turn off windows updates in windows 7 follow these steps:

Click the start button, in the search box type in 'windows updates', click on 'windows update'
in the search results list, in the left side of the windows update window click 'change settings'
then in the option bar select 'Never check for updates'.

 

Search Bar/Cortana

From the description, I understand that you are still receiving the pop up notifications, despite having disabled the search functionality in windows 10.

Steps to disable the Search Bar

• Right click on the task bar.
• Select the "Search" option.
• Select "Disable."

However, if the above steps don't work out, perform the below suggested steps and check if it helps to resolve the issue.

Open a CMD window started as Administrator.

Repair corruption: Dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth.

Run this command next: Sfc /scannow

Now run these two commands:

PowerShell -ExecutionPolicy Unrestricted

Get-AppXPackage -AllUsers |Where-Object {$_.InstallLocation -like "*SystemApps*"} | Foreach {Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register "$($_.InstallLocation)\AppXManifest.xml"}

IE11 Google Toolbar no auto search suggestions, no search history?

Since the last Win 10 update my Google Toolbar won't list any search suggestions as I type and there is no search history listed. The Google tool bar will allow a search, but after a few searches no search history shows and no "clear search" button is listed either.

I have turnd on "Suggest searches as you type", and "store search histroy on my computer" in the Google Toolbar options.

Any suggestions to fix this?
