Security - User, Group or Built-In Security Principal: Explanation?

Could someone explain the purpose of all the accounts listed under the Advanced button of the User, Group or Built-In Security Principal search-box that appears when you click the Change link under Advanced Security Settings (Properties > Security > Advanced) for any file or folder?

Specifically, the long list of names made available when you click Find Now. Such as 'Administrators', 'Creator Owner', 'authenticated authority asserted identity' etc.

What is the purpose of these names/groups? Is there a way to reduce the number of these by pruning unused/unwanted groups? Are there options to edit the members of these groups etc?

The more detail and depth people can go into on this the better.

    Much appreciated.

    :)

  2. The application-specific permission settings do not grant Local Activation permission for the COM Server application

great links but I'm not able to set the registry permissions that unlock the dcom permissions.

form the link a lot of people were having the same problem and unable to unlocking the registry permissions.

Is there a trick to unlocking the permissions?

currently trustedinstaller is the owner and trustedinstaller contains User, Group, or Built-in security principal.

not sure why admin can't add permissions?

    any solution's to the problem?

    [SOLVED] Cannot start Store

In theory there should at least one user or security principal with access to the folder on your machine. If this theory is correct you should be able to apply additional security settings using that user or security principal.

Therefore I would suggest trying to apply the security rights using that user (or security principal if possible) through a command prompt started as that user.

Sysinternals has a tool that can start the command prompt as another user. Read more here:

How do you run CMD.exe under the Local System Account?

Good luck, you will need it!

Security - User, Group or Built-In Security Principal: Explanation?

Don't touch or you can brick your PC. Creators are the user that created a source, admin have full control ,system if higher than admin, owner is the person that created a file or folder.

Which of these accounts can safely be deleted?

Can any of these accounts be used to gain remote (network-based) access to a PC?

Still working on locking down access from the internet without explicit authorisation, consent and active monitoring by the physically-present user.
