Yes, that is the only thing I have found that can prevent automatic updates.

I think I am going to just wipe the HD and do a fresh install (or I guess it would be a factory reset since it was all pre-loaded and there isn't even a cd-key on the laptop) and create an image off that.

  3. I have also found that notification of available updates can be given automatically via VBScript.

I have no clue what you're talking about lol.
Is this another method to prevent them?

  5. No, this is not.
The VBScript will automatically notify you of available updates.
Automatic notifications have nothing to do with automatic updates.

Up to you. A repair install would be my first option. It retains all your files and programs.
But a clean install or factory reset is always a good thing!! *Smile

If you'd like to see your key, run this:

  7. I store everything on the secondary drive, so if ever Windows majorly crashes (or in this case runs like garbage) I can just instantly hit 'reset' and I won't lose anything I don't want to.
Just finished and it is running better than ever *Smile It didn't even force me to make a user/login password this time!

Immediately set the connection to metered so updates hopefully won't download. I am going to use that program you recommended though to make a system image to make the process quicker next time!

Cheers! Yes, Macrium will make images (like snapshots of your OS at a point in time), and are very easy to restore - faster than a reset, and you don't lose all your installed programs. Do look into it, and make regular images (it has a scheduling feature). Best of all, the free version is all that is needed for most people.

p.s. Make regular images, make sure you check the box to "verify", and keep several at all times.

  9. I confirm that nothing will be downloaded as long as you do not click on 'Check for updates'.

As you use metered connections, Windows Defender will not automatically update definitions either.
