Windows 10: Seems simple... how to install Windows 10 on a blank hard drive

HDD crashes on Windows 7 PC; there's a problem with the motor. Somehow I think it's easy to install windows 10 to a new HDD, but hours later, without booting successfully, I give up!
I have Windows 10 on a utility HDD that I use to upgrade PC's with Windows 7 to Windows 10. I ran un setup from this HDD to install Windows onto the new HDD, but my process is somehow missing an important step, which is creating a valid boot/system partition.
The PC is older than 5 years and likely has only BIOS boot. I've been googling all day with little patience and many interruptions, so I am unable to get it right. Can anyone share a simple procedure to get Win 10 installed and bootable (or point me to a link)?

W7 Hard drive partition issue

to get rid of that 100 meg windows partition that setup creates for you on a new install on a blank hdd:

- press shift+f10 when on the partition management screen in setup <-- this opens a command prompt
- diskpart <-- start the windows command line partition management tool
- list disk <--- list the installed hdds in this computer for the next step
- select disk 0 <- might have to replace 0 with the number of the correct disk
- clean <-- this will erase all data on the disk you selected one step up- dont use the wrong disk!
- create partition primary <- creates a primary partition taking up all space on the drive, adjust the command if necessary
- exit, exit to exit diskpart and the command prompt
- click refresh in partition manager and select your newly created partition and install to that
