Selecting shutdown/hibernate causes the next boot to fail

Windows 10 version: 21H2Since "not very long" didn't happen before, and I don't think I updated since either if selecting hibernate the computer shuts down, but then starting the computer back up e.g. by pressing spacebar then results in the computer freezing at the "screen with the motherboard logo".Then holding the power button untill the computer shuts down and then powering on the computer consistently caused booting to succeed without exception and windows 10 then resumes from hibernate just fine with all applications still open.

  2. Desktop Shutdown and Standby/Hibernate Icons

I discovered some time ago a simple means of adding two desktop icons to cover Shutdown and Standby/Hibernate. I now use these icons all the time as it avoids using the Start procedure, which I never use at all unless I wish to Restart immediately after shutdown. Even then, I tend to use my desktop icons. Just close the browser, click the desktop icon and it is done.

On your desktop, right click the free space, then click new shortcut, you get a Wizard, copy/paste the command for the location type from one of the below commands (in this case, %windir%\System32\rundll32.exe powrprof.dll,SetSuspendState ). Then click Next. You are asked to give it a title - Standby, Hibernate or Shutdown, I suggest using "Standby/Hibernate", click Finish.

    Shutdown: %windir%\System32\shutdown.exe -s
    Reboot: %windir%\System32\shutdown.exe -r
    Logoff: %windir%\System32\shutdown.exe -l
    Standby: %windir%\System32\rundll32.exe powrprof.dll,SetSuspendState
    Hibernate: %windir%\System32\rundll32.exe powrprof.dll,SetSuspendState Hibernate
I have listed Hibernate for reference only, as the Hibernate desktop icon does not work for systems reasons, Hibernate can only be achieved by manually using the Power Options properties panel.

Use CNTRL+C to copy and CNTRL+V to paste.

Hibernate is automatic if the Hibernate box is checked in the Power Options properties panel. If the box is not checked, then Standby is automatic. You have to select this box to give you the option you want.

Standby is more convenient if you are using the PC constantly, it is a quicker recovery, but has a power trickle. For long periods of absence, use Hibernate, it is much slower in recovering, but effectively shuts your computer down.

The Power options panel is found by Control Panel>Power Options>Hibernate.

The two desktop icons created can be changed by Right clicking the icon then Properties>Change icon>Browse>Windows 32>shell32dll>select icon>OK>Apply>OK
You now have two brand new icons on your desktop for Shutdown and Standby/Hibernate. It works a treat.

    My icons are :-

Windows 10 "shutdown" causes next boot to fail

Windows 10 "shutdown" causes next boot to fail. After performing a normal shutdown, the next time I try to power up and boot the computer, the process fails with the black screen and blue windows showing. This is true whether booting up in normal mode, or
safe mode. Cycling power, or just pressing the reset button will cause the next boot to succeed. Again whether booting in normal or safe modes. When shutting down from safe mode, the next boot always works (even in normal mode). A "restart" always works.
The "shutdown" process appears to be leaving something on the hard drive that causes a cold boot to fail, but the process of trying to cold boot corrects the problem for the next time.

Has anyone had this experience, and do you know how to fix it?

  4. Selecting shutdown/hibernate causes the next boot to fail

Hybrid shutdown causing my computer to hang when I start it as it is booting into Windows

I sent 3 different shutdown commands (1 at a time per boot) and 1 fails me which is needed for fast startup:

    Commands:

    1. shutdown.exe /t 0 /g
    2. shutdown.exe /t 0 /sg /f
    3. shutdown.exe /t 0 /s /hybrid

    What they do and did:

    1. Reboot and automatically login and lock (working as intended)
    2. Shutdown and automatically login and lock on next startup (working as intended)
    3. Hybrid shutdown with fast startup. This is the one that locks up my PC at boot. It makes it to the first Windows Logo screen and just stops. I have to hit the reset button (same as hold power button down).

    What I've tried:

    • Recreate the hibernation file: powercfg.exe /hibernate off && powercfg.exe /hibernate on
    • Rebooted and trying to make a clean boot up.
    • Looked through Event Viewer but only find the event that the computer was forcefully shut off. (not really sure what to look for)
    • I've already run DISM and SFC also.
    • EDIT: Just ran Memory Diagnostics and no errors were detected. I've also ran disk check which I do once every month anyway.

    My Specs:

    Windows 10 x64 1903 - Build 18362.239
