    Problem starting Windows Defender

Software conflicts can sometimes prevent apps like Windows Defender from loading. We'd like to learn more about your concern so that we could provide the proper resolution. We just have a few questions for you:

    • Which build version of Windows 10 is on your computer? To check, click
, type winver, and press Enter. For example, 14393.1066.
    • Did you make any changes to your computer before this started happening?
    • Did you get any error messages? If yes, please post a screenshot.

Important: This section, method, or task contains steps that tell you how to modify the registry. However, serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly. Therefore, make sure that you follow these steps carefully.
For added protection, back up the registry before you modify it. Then, you can restore the registry if a problem occurs. For more information about how to back up and restore the registry, refer to this

Since you mentioned that Windows Defender was missing under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft, follow these steps to create it:

    • Navigate to the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft folder in
      Registry Editor.
    • Right-click the Microsoft folder.
    • Click New > Key.
    • Rename it to Windows Defender.
    • To create the DisableAntiSpyware entry as suggested by the forum article, right-click your newly-created Windows Defender folder.
    • Click New > DWORD (32-bit) Value.
    • Name it DisableAntiSpyware and set the value to 0.
    • Restart your computer.

We look forward to your response and the result of the troubleshooting.
