Windows 10: Set Network Location to Private or Public in Windows 10

Discus and support Set Network Location to Private or Public in Windows 10 in Windows 10 Tutorials to solve the problem; @ I went ahead and selected "Always Notify" for UAC in Option 1, and it removed the "Make this PC Discoverable" setting.     I'm not sure where you got this from, but it's best to leave UAC set to its default setting instead to avoid side effects like that.

    And no...it did not stay "Private". That's why I performed the UAC change...

    Could I be having issues, because I'm not logged in as an "Administrator"? And if so, how do I do that? I ran the "cmd" window as an admin, but I don't know how to do that, outside of the cmd window.

    Ah, ok. Yeah, the Make this PC discoverable setting will not be available if you have UAC set to Always notify.

    Set Network Location to Private or Public in Windows 10

    Hi guys,

    I am having a problem with setting the network to private and could use some help. My PC is running Win 10 pro and i also use a VPN service which seems to be the cause for this problem. When i am not connected to the VPN, i can set the network to private by making the PC discoverable in the network settings.

    But as soon as i connect to the VPN, the option "make this PC discoverable" disappears from the settings and my network is now visible as public instead of private.

    How do i set the VPN connection to a constant private mode in Windows 10?

    Hi Brink and thank you for the welcome *Smile

    I tried what you suggested but when doing this, i noticed that whenever i am connected to my VPN, the Windows network shows up as "unidentified network" instead of network 1,2,3 or whatever. So when i went into regedit and looked for networks, i found some but none called unidentified.
    There was one network with the value 0 so i changed it to 1 (private) but after checking, my VPN connection still shows as public.

    I am not really sure why it says unidentified network in Windows when i am connected to the VPN but it seems that this is the cause for the problem. If i could only find the VPN network in the list of networks in regedit, i think i would be able to change the value to 1.

    Hmm..not sure how to proceed with this. Any ideas?

    @redturtle,

    Since it's an unidentified network, you might see if using Option 3 may work to set this, but click on Unidentified Networks at step 3 and use step 6.
