Setting Program defaults does not work in my Windows 10

My two most important defaults are:
    Browser
    Emails
My only default has to be Firefox and is set as default. But, the check box will not uncheck so it asks me every time. This is a NEW problem as it was not like this a month ago.

    EMAILS:
When on a web page that has an email address as a LINK , Win 7 when clicked, Win 7 would bring up Firefox, populate the address in my Yahoo email, and then you created your email.
But in Win 10, it goes to a program called "MAIL" a part of Win 10. To me it is totally useless and I would Win 10 to work like Win 7 . Microsoft said to go to DEFAULTS and set to Firefox. Can not do. The boxes are checked to "MAIL" (Microsoft) but will NOT uncheck, thereby not allowing any changes.
It FORCES me to use "MAIL" as my default.

    Advise please.

    :)

    can't change default program

    Does this work:

Right-click Start, select Control Panel. Find Default Programs and scroll through the list of the installed programs. Simply click on "Set this program as default"

  3. Windows 10 program default settings

Can anyone please assist with how to correctly register a custom email program in Windows 10?

The custom program works perfectly in Windows 10, but I am unable to get the program recognized as mailto: or the default Mail Client so as be able to stop Outlook coming up (eg when a mail link is clicked in a browser). The program works perfectly in Windows
7 and the registry settings for Windows 7 work with respect to both default Mail Client and mailto:, but not in Windows 10.

What are the additional registry settings required in Windows 10 to get my program:

1 recognized as a mail program so I can set it as the default (the Protocol settings that work in Windows 7 registry seem to be ignored) - it doesn't even come up in the mail client options (any of the lists), and there is no option to select a mail client
other than from the Store or the ones Microsoft wants everyone to use

2 able to be set as the default mailto: client - it doesn't even come up in the list of all apps to select from to be able to set it as a default manually by program - although it DOES appear correctly in the list of programs accessible from the All Apps
    list from the start menu

Before anyone points me to the 500 search links I have already looked at ad nauseam that suggest setting these defaults manually - I can't. The app does not come up in the list of apps (any of the options) from which defaults can be set even though it
is correctly registered as an installed app from the start menu, nor is there a file-type I can click on in Explorer to get at the defaults that way. Nor does changing any of the registry settings as used in Windows 7 make any difference, and ALL of the
links I have searched for come up with registry settings for pre-Windows 10, not Windows 10, even though I specify Windows 10 in my searches......

I have even tried using Advanced Installer to install the program to see if that made any difference with registering - it doesn't.

If someone can point me to where Microsoft is hiding the actual Windows 10 registry specifications for mail clients that actually work it would be very much appreciated?

    Thanks

Setting Program defaults does not work in my Windows 10

Go to the location in the first picture I attached.
Scroll down and click Set defaults by app
    Click Firefox
    Press Manage
Scroll down to MAILTO, set it to Firefox if it already isn't.
Try setting all the web related entries to Firefox (refer to the second picture. I use Google Chrome as my default browser)

Go to the location in the first picture I attached.
Scroll down and click Set defaults by app
    Click Firefox
    Press Manage
Scroll down to MAILTO, set it to Firefox if it already isn't.

Click Firefox gives me SCR 1.jpg. there is no "manage". It lets me select ECHO (browser} or GO TO APP STORE ( see SCR 4.jpg) no browsers, etc in STORE.

So, you show in your "MAIL" your GOOGLE. i "click "MAIL"

I get: APP.jpg, MAIL which is what I am trying to get rid of OR GO TO APP STORE SCR 3.jpg

Wonder why our APP screens are so different??

Thanks for trying. But is only ONE reason I Hate Win 10 but by no means the only one.

Unless thing have changed with the latest version, Firefox's Setup doesn't register Firefox as being capable of handling the MAILTO protocol (even though it can). Without this setting in the Registry Firefox doesn't appear in the list of available apps when you try to set up MAILTO. You can edit the registry to add the mailto protocol to Firefox's capabilities.

This is how I fixed it so that I can use Firefox whenever I click a mailto: link using 'choose default applications by protocol'. You'll find this if you scroll down to the bottom of 'defaults apps'.

    ...in the address bar

You know, the mailto command works from anywhere, not just a link in a web page. I test mine from the WinKey+R run box, just type...
    mailto:dummyname@not.a.real.address
    ....and run it.

Can you point me to : CHOOSE DEFAULT APPLICATION BY PROTOCOL"? Screen?

Thanks, think this will work if I can get to this screen.

Your screens are not like mine (see attached).

My Firefox accepted your changes, so did the registry.

But the DEFAULTS, by Protocol, etc O LY offer the Store or MAIL.
Also on the Protocol screen, mine shows:
    MAILTO
    URL:mailto

    While yours is:

    MAILTO
    URL:mailto PROTOCOL

    MY OS VERSION IS: 15063.850
    Is yours newer? older?

Have you restarted the PC yet? You probably need to before the Firefox mailto key takes effect.

Mine (and, by the looks of it @pepanee's) are how they look in Fall Creators update (1709, os build 16299...). Yours is Creators Update (1703). But I have Anniversary Update (1607, 14393...) on my test machine at the moment and that too says:
    MAILTO
    URL:MailTo Protocol

....odd, but probably not significant. Try the restart and if you can then select Firefox I expect it to work just the same...

In Firefox the email client used to open links is set in Firefox preferences - not Windows Default Programs.

Yes, but if you want to use Firefox as the email client from a mailto link anywhere else in Windows, not just from a webpage in Firefox, then it also needs to be set as the default mailto handler.

As I said in post #5, after setting it as the default handler...
