  1. Sharing

I am using Windows 10, 64-bit with October 2020 update on two computers. I began having problems with them recognizing each other after installing the October 2020 update.

Yesterday, on my main computer I was able to access the secondary but from the secondary I wasn't able to access files on my main computer. Today this has changed and I suspect that it may be because I changed my secondary' settings from Public to a Private network just like how the main computer is set up. Today my main computer is unable to access files from my secondary, even though it shows the secondary as a blue monitor with keyboard in the Windows Explorer<Network folder. My secondary computer has changed its icon since yesterday when viewed in the Windows Explorer<Network folder after several reboots. Yesterday, even after I applied the registry edit to the secondary to change it from a public to a private network, it showed itself and the main computer as what looked like an upright storage device Media Device and when selecting either icon Windows Media Player opened without playing anything. Today, for whatever reason, the secondary changed after several reboots and now shows itself as a blue monitor with a keyboard and as a Media Device without showing anything to acknowledge the main computer as being on the same network.

Both have their Network and Sharing Centre<Advanced Settings so that network discovery, file and printer sharing are all selected for each of the three headings and that the password requirement is shut off. Windows Firewall has been checked and File and Printer Sharing is set. The error code I get on my main computer when I try to browse files on my secondary using its icon in Windows Explorer<Network folder is 0x80070035.

I've tried installing D-lan but by default it did not recognize each other. Even when typing in the name of the computer I was unable to get the program working and to check the steps in FAQs is too much.

Any ideas of how to resolve so I can get them to acknowledge each other as being on the same network and able to share files using whatever is in Windows 10?

    :)

  2. Cannot access shared network drive

I could scream! so much time wasted on this stupid error, as if time is not precious enough!
It probably would work fine if I could see the other computer! But I cannot see the other computer!

    Cannot access shared network drive

Personally, I wouldnt use Everyone. If anyone hacks into you, they have full access to everything and can demolish everything on your raid. I would rather set up accounts and access separately for each person. That way, I know who did all that damage. In the end with a little extra work, I feel more secure by using Authenticated Users.

    If this helps.
step 1 create non-microsoft account and without email and address without admin rights
step 2 share a drive or folder to specific user account (if Everyone is listed, remove it)
step 3 set security > add Authenticated Users (if more than 1 account) or add specific users
step 3a remove Everyone from list
step 3b uncheck full control and write for all items listed except SYSTEM and Admin account.
step 4 right click Start > Computer Management > System Tools > Shared Folders > Shares ... to verify settings and change anything else. You can also see the number of connections to each share here.
